I'm assuming there are others like me, those who have massive amounts of coal and love running about the nearly infinite caverns, 'tagging' them with torches and searching for iron and such... Well here's the thing, I've got about 2k coal, and it takes up a hell of a lot of space. There is almost no practical application for coal beyond torches, the only other thing you can do with it is fuel forges and minecarts, neither of these require very little coal. Instead of just ignoring all the coal I come upon, I believe a few changes should be made.
#1. Coal blocks, just like iron, gold, and diamond. 9 coal = 1 coal block. Simple enough, right?
#2. 'Sun Stone'. Sun stone would basically be a gem like thing created by combining several coal blocks. I was thinking 4 coal blocks = 1 sun stone (36 coal). A sun stone could then be put on a shaft to make a sun stone torch. The torches would be like normal torches, illuminating a 16 tile area, however, any monsters that wonder into the range would start to burn as if they were in the sun. I believe this is balanced, sense it does take a fair amount of coal to be made. (144x as much as a normal torch >.>)
#3. Diamonds, 9x coal blocks = 1 diamond gem. So 81 coal would be equivalent to 1 diamond. It's not really realistic (you know, we're changing the molecular structure with our fist and what not), but hell, it would eat up a bunch of the coal I've got lying around.
#1 and #2 are the ones I like the most, the third is just an additive. Opinions?
I've counted 1956 coal, I still leave some behind because it's pain to mine all of it.
I would love to see hot air balloons powered by coal.
Very much yes.
Crafted by making a leather balloon, a stick basket, leather and sand for weight bags, and a furnace for the power source.
Even better would be a large sized blimp with an interior you could walk around in while someone pilots it, even though that could be a bit too much...
There's plenty more sand, earth, rock, and gravel in the game than coal, yet I don't see anyone begging for recipes involving these blocks. What's that you say? Coal is different because it's rare?
Well apparently not.
Just stop mining for coal if you don't need it. There's no reason to add a feature to Minecraft just because you've developed OCD.
WE NEED COAL BLOCKS. Easier to store which is extremely helpful in SMP, alternative to logs for fireplaces for those who don't like the light of day very much, could smelt 96 items for large projects... IMO lava buckets should be upped to 128 to keep them from being too similar.
Hey guys.. I have too much stone... we should make more uses for that as well...
You'd be stupid in saying we shouldn't have more uses for stone.
And why is that? Stone's relative uselessness is what makes the ores within all the more exciting and worth looking for. It's a balance issue. The gameplay is supposed to function such that you figure out the best ways to extract the rare ores from the earth while avoiding mining useless stuff as much as possible. Much of the strategy, challenge, and indeed fun of this game revolve around the fact that some blocks are much less useful than others.
Hurr durr guys, it's a game, this is the suggestion board, if you don't want to hear new ideas, stay off it.
It's also a discussion board. If you can't handle discussion, maybe you should go find an unconditional praise board.
Edit: But hey, just so you two don't feel clever: I can make a tower out of dirt, I can't make a tower out of coal.
No, but you can make a tower out of glass. Make 10 furnaces out of what I'm sure is an extensive stone collection, fill them with coal and sand, then leave your game running while you go outside and learn how to interact with people without being a smart ass. Come back, refill the furnaces with more coal and sand. Repeat. Post the results in a thread complaining there aren't enough uses for giant glass towers.
You can use stone blocks to make furnaces that are purely for building. Furnaces are insanely hard to break. I think it's the best block in multiplayer since you can store stuff inside it AND use it to build.
EDIT: I also like the coal block idea. :biggrin.gif:

I used to be known as Scizor on the MC forums. I run a pony Ask blog!
It's Extvia!

Hell no lol. I've got 1956 coal minus the stuff I use to fuel the forges. If you mine you'll be swimming in the stuff.
I click the calculator button on my keyboard >.>. (4672 coal btw, nice collection xD)
Coal stacks... Growing by the second... For gods sake, help D:
but. diamonds are meant to be VERY rare so i think it should take even more coal?
9 coal blocks make a compressed coal block then 4 of them make a diamond.
That would make it 324 coal to make a diamond.
