imagine a lumbering albatross. the player has wings which glide very efficiently when speed is achieved, but takeoff should be done from altitude to build momentum on the dive down.
right click would pump the wings down, release to bring back up. basically the player would need to feel out the best rhythm for maximum lift. beating wings from a standing position may lift the character a few feet up, but standing takeoff would be impossible.
this would make for a smooth gliding type of transportation over long distances, assuming the player finds a good cliff to take off from.
a lot more control, vertical flight is effortless. would probably need to consume coal, and it would be nice to see a box added to the inventory screen for "jetpack fuel" that could be refilled midflight. jetpack can easily ascend/descend (using jump/sneak) but forward and lateral movement would not be nearly as fast as a player wearing wings coming out of a dive.
it's obvious people want to fly. the first thing admins give themselves is flight, and it would be nice to see a way for the legit players to enjoy the view as well.
So? If Terraria has it doesn't mean its copying. Many games have wings and jetpacks, you could say that having a jetpack would be copying GTA SA and the wings were copied from God Of War as it has them in it, but its not.
Jetpacks ahve been suggested a million times and said no to just as many times. They are just flat out too modern for this game. As for wings, I think we're better off with the "Flying monsters" the are "Possibly rideable" Notch has mentioned.

I love using jetpacks in games , its just really fun and easy to kill with them in games as Warhawk , i love the way it makes you choose your spawn and i always spawn in the jetpack machine LOL. But as much as i love having jetpacks i have to say they dont fit in minecraft...
And wings... this is not terraria ( tho terraria is f*cking awesome )
