Have an idea for an item that could be pretty useful. A simple time piece that is similar in shape to the compas. It is split in the middle with the top half being blue (day) the bottom dark purple (night) and a red hand in the middle to show the approximate point in the day cycle.
Here's an idea for the recipe:
Using the diamonds and Obsidian makes it a more higher level item to obtain of course. The idea behind this comes from when I have specific tasks I have in mind depending on the time of day. When it's dark I go mining and in the day hunting/farming. When I'm deep in my mine I sometimes wish I could tell when the sun is going to come up so I can take care of tasks outdoors.

I like the idea of a day/night cycle clock thingy, but seriously, diamond and obsidian? It should be as easy to make as a compas. No idea how to make it otherwise though.
But then you could fuse it with a compass like so:

=compas
=timepiece
That way you could make a all in one clock! Then maby you could hang it to a wall...
I was actually trying to make it a bit more difficult to craft, hence the expensive items. For some reason it felt like more of a reward to build as you progress and find more diamonds etc. And also to give obsidian some use. Perhaps the top layer all glass, a diamond on either side of the red stone, and then the obsidian.
Yeah, I understand your point. And it's the same feeling I had when they brought in the compass. I thought, well that's the point of "survival", keeping track of your bearings, remembering land marks and leaving "bread-crumbs" to find your way back. I made a compass, but I never use it.
Thanks for the support and suggestions. Have only been playing this for a few weeks and can count me as one of the easily addicted. Though I'm at a point now where I'm wanting to find some more dungeons (have found a couple) and get a record for my jukebox.
I have another idea for Carpets... but that would be another thread. Perhaps Notch has that in mind when he implements dying cloth.
Seems like a good idea, but maybe lower the cost a little, something like:

I think it should a recipe similar to the compass, since it pretty much looks like one as well. For this, you would still need to have at least four diamonds (three for the pick to mine the obsidian), but the iron keeps it from being too cheap. Perhaps a wall-mounted clock could have the recipe you suggested, as I don't think that too many players would be willing to blow three diamonds and obsidian blocks on something that they could easily lose to a brief second of inattentiveness near lava, or any of the countless other ways that Minecraft tends to screw you over.
Thanks Altrivius, that is actually a pretty good recipe too. I know these days with so many games having "easy" mode, I thought about trying to make something that you have to work harder at obtaining. I myself have found quite a few diamonds, but don't really use them that much other than making one pick once in awhile for harder ores. I still make mostly stone or picks, since they are so cheap... Just keep a work bench around and make more in 5 minutes.
I do like this idea. And I like Altrivius' recipe a bit more, seeing as it's more like that of the compass like he stated.
At one point when mining I wanted to know if it was daytime out, so I could collect pork/bacon. So I tunneled my way all the way back to the top, from the very bottom, only to find that I had gone through a whole day cycle, and it was just starting to get dark again. This would have been a very useful tool at that time, and I'm sure a lot of you other miners have done the same thing.
Yeah typically when I'm doing some of my mines I go straight down in a 3x3 pattern so I can just look straight up to see the sky. But there are those random caves full of coal and iron that are hard to pass up. Next thing you know, you're in a labyrinth running out of tools/food. This is why I thought of this.

Thoughts, opinions?
Edit: Modified recipe based on some suggestions.
I dig straight down.

Ooh ooh and maybe you could make a clock that can be placed on walls.

Now that this has been thought of who needs clocks?
And, that clock is way to easy to make, a stick with planks around it? WAY to simple

We are building it bigger
We are widening the corridors
And adding more lanes
