This is one of the better suggestions I've seen so far. And I don't think you mentioned it, but what if using a Golden pick on smooth stone gave you a smooth stone block instead of cobblestone?
Well, I didn't add it because smooth stone is acquirable by smelting cobble... Yes, glass is acquirable by smelting sand, but when you break glass, you don't get sand back... you get nothing.
BUT... you have a point! Gold tools would be slower AND last fewer uses; if you really did want to retrieve smooth stone directly, why NOT have the choice of spending gold on it!
Seriously, fall damage is extremely important. If I'm building a bridge, even with sneak, falling off is deadly. Hanging on with a little HP and keeping your eight diamond tools that you would've had lost in a random plain seventy thousand blocks away from your spawn if it weren't for that gold armor. And the tool functions are amazing, being able to collect leaves, ice, boats after they are placed, and independent snow would help oh so much.

Thanks, was thinking about coming here a bit ago but never got around to it :tongue.gif:
The problem is, fall damage is too important to put on gold armour. If it was an enchantment on gold armour, it would be valid, but it would make gold armour more useful than normal armour, instead of providing an alternate use that is useful, but doesn't have a direct impact on gameplay, as the suggested gold tools do.
This is one of the sanest "We need a use for gold" threads I have seen. Sure, it doesn't make a whole lot of logical sense, but thats not important. However, golden armour is still useless. Any ideas for that?
Use for gold armor: The gold armor could be used as a home decoration.
Ex.

[]
Each gold bar could represent a peice of the armor: Helmet, torso, legs and boots.
Of course the wood is used as the mounting place for all of the armor. I think it would look great inside a home.

"And the Queen said nothing... Monday:nothing; Tuesday, Wednesday:nothing; Thursday: nothing."
Imagine. You walk into the castle. The cobblestone-wood mix is beautifully ornate. Aged, ruinious. you imagine there is nothing of value insde. You walk downstairs, and through a Looooooooong cleanstone coridoor. You see a small door. it is iron. in front of it are some stairs. Going up them, you see a large depction of herobrine. You move towards him, transfixed by the painting. you suddenly realised you stepped on to a stone pressure plate.a pitfall is opened. you fall, seemingly neverendingly. You think you are going to die. even your diamond armor won't help you now. you shut your eyes. you hear water. you open youur eyes. You have landed in a stream of water. the water has taken you into a grand, ornate, diamond/gold striped walls, with an arch of obsidian around a 'door' of sand. you press a lever on the floor. the sand falls, leaving behind it a small stairway, made of gold. you walk up the stairway. and then you see it. the 'thing'. HEROBRINE. It is the greatest bettle you have ever fought. you battle through his creeper minions. Finally, after 10 long hours, you finally find an opening. You stab him, brutally in the chest with a diamond sword. An epic cutscene ensues. He staggers back, flailing wildly. He collapses. He pulls you towards him. Hi whispers two words to you. "Wak-k-ke u-u-u-p...". He pushes you away, and explodes, with you just out of the blast range. the wall behind him collapses behind him. you walk in to a new room that has been revealed. You see it. The most prised posession in all of minecraftopia. The golden armor of herobrine. You wake up, sweating, on the floor of your base. it is there. in front of you. the blessed armor.

Interesting ideas, but gold wouldn't be something to do this with. For removing leaves I'd say ask for a trimmer or something. But we just need something better for gold in general. Finding better uses for the tools is more of a distraction than a solution in my opinion.
No seriously. More and more I'm reminded of this idea and how nice it would be. It would vastly improve the range of things you could do in the game without cheating/editing with relatively little effort programming-wise, and it would actually give you a decent reason to mine more than the 4 gold needed to make a watch.
The Aether already fulfills the potential for gold. Nothing more is needed. Sry, but no.
On the one hand, we have an idea that takes existing tools (gold versions), existing items (everythnig a gold tool would yield can already be carried in inventory, though cheating is sometimes necessary), and only slightly existing game mechanics (some blocks yield materials when broken).
On the other hand, we have a proposal that requires nontrivial retooling of the map generator and map format, new blocks and associated items all as a precursor.
But of course, these two ideas are not mutually exclusive like you are keen to imply.

The table could be made something like:

The table would fill up a 2x2x2 area or extend the same way fences do.
Gold should be used only for ornamental/sentimental purposes.

This suggestion deserves to live!
