As we all know, gold tools are not very useful:
They are, after all, as weak and as dull as Wood. Although they can make great potential for a Currency system on many servers (it's rare enough) and may have a POTENTIAL currency use in Single Player Mode which is not yet implemented either, it remains, to me, kind of a letdown that once you craft a gold tool, it will have absolutely no sane function.
...but what if it did?
What COULD gold tools possibly do that other tools cannot do better, faster, and for longer?
Ask yourself this: What can other tools NOT do? I have an answer:
There are a few blocks around the world that you can't NATURALLY have in your inventory. There are servers that allow one to 'spawn' the items, but that's not a solution; that's just proof that there SHOULD be a legitimate way to do it... and there isn't.
The following are the blocks I speak of:
WHOLE ICE
WHOLE LEAVES
SHEETS OF SNOW
LIVE GRASS
COAL ORE
DIAMOND ORE
REDSTONE ORE
After placement, TNT cannot be recovered back into ones' inventory!
Gravel is at risk to turning into flint the next time you pick it up!
A Boat cannot be accepted back into ones' inventory after it has been deployed!
I am referring to unmodified, original versions of the block AS it appears on the map, rather than a "broken version" of that block--
Operations that require The Finesse of a Finer Tool...
A GOLDEN TOOL.
-Allow a Golden Axe the ability to carefully cut free the whole leaves of a tree, which you can choose to later place alone on dirt ground as Shrubbery, and to dismantle a boat for inventory acquisition once again!
-Allow a Golden Hoe the ability to carefully prize living sod from the earth so that you may plant it in your cave system with ease, if it is indeed well let enough to grow grass.
-Allow a Golden Shovel the ability to not only peel away a fresh layer of fallen snow that you may apply to another horizontal surface (and pretend it is a pillow for instance), but also to guarantee that your gravel STAYS gravel
-Allow a Golden Pick the ability to delicately chip a solid block of ice free from the lake, for you to go and place elsewhere; and Furthermore, the ability to store coal ore, diamond ore, and redstone ore--for your own decorative purposes and implementations, or just for the Compact Storage of redstone dust (of which there are several to one block of its own ore)
-Allow a Golden Sword the ability to pry glass from its settings without breaking it, or perhaps the ability to shear String from sheep rather than whole Cloth (as spiders being the only option for string is entirely ridiculous), or at least the ability to safely Defuse a block of TNT so it may be taken back into your own inventory, as there is otherwise currently no other way.
If you'll notice:
MOST of these operations (with a few exceptions) are for appearance; they are not particularly practical.
Consider this: Golden Tools are exactly the same now. Not practical, but pretty :tongue.gif:
none of these, however, will extend the per-use longevity of golden tools beyond that which it already is: the same as wood.
TL;DR
Make Gold Tools Useful by letting them harvest stuff that regular tools usually break, and some examples.
I hope you'll take these considerations well, Community, and Notch.
Thank you for your time.
I think this is a great idea, i hate misplacing tnt or glass because then you have to go looking for coal if you're our, or kill another creeper in order to get more gunpowder.

"And the Queen said nothing... Monday:nothing; Tuesday, Wednesday:nothing; Thursday: nothing."
I really like this idea, but I'm not entirely sure if golden tools should fill this need. At any rate, I agree that there should be specialized tools for manipulating otherwise non-manipulable blocks.
This is one of the better suggestions I've seen so far. And I don't think you mentioned it, but what if using a Golden pick on smooth stone gave you a smooth stone block instead of cobblestone?
This is one of the sanest "We need a use for gold" threads I have seen. Sure, it doesn't make a whole lot of logical sense, but thats not important. However, golden armour is still useless. Any ideas for that?

Fall Damage!!
I dunno. Is that "sane"?

This doesn't make much sense but I am just throwing it out there: Gold is soft metal right? How about golden armour reduces fall damage (because it bends easily or something)? Notch is adding crouch to prevent falling from edges but this would still be useful for those who build in high places. Armour would of course take serious damage when player hits the ground.
I like this, perhaps a full set of armour will negate all falling damage from a high height, but will obliterate the armour. See it as a second chance if you fall off a massive ledge while building.
A gold armor offers little to no protection
its just there for style because of its gold shiny color
Maybe wearing gold armor and using gold tools will increase the speed of gold tools?
This is an awesome idea btw and I love it

Making a list of possible functions for gold armor.
Fire Resistance
Fall Damage Resistance
More Breath
Faster Movement
Higher Jump
Faster Tool/Weapon Use
Glow in the Dark
Enchant-able/magical material?
Wider Item pickup radius
Scares off Enemies
Absolutely NO damage to health, just to the armor
Boosted Plant Growth near you

This is the only one that I think really fits, and notch has already mentioned doing that with gold tools and armour. Most of the others made it distinctly better armour.
Well, gold armor is better than leather armor (I have tested it), so it still isn't THAT useless, but it still needs a buff, I think reducing/negating fall damage is good.

Otherwise, I agree with all but the TNT diffusion.
