So, minecarts are already locomotive, it would be pretty easy to add a mechanical drill to it to dig tunnels! :biggrin.gif:
The drill would wear out over time, but it would provide a way for the players to dig, AND go do other things simultaneously. The drill should also make the coal put into the furnace run down fast (considering it'd take more energy to run a drill AND an engine)
The drill itself could be made out of different materials too, and the stronger the material, the longer the drill itself will go without breaking :biggrin.gif:
Say, this could be the combination for it? :
Or any other material (other than wood... a wooden drill cutting through stone would seem pretty stupid... unless it only dug up dirt!!! or clay)

Tree punchers. Everyone knows you use a pickaxe for rock, not your fists.
Because the idea of a wooden Pickaxe made much more sense than a wooden drill, right?
But in any case, you'd need a furnace in there and supply it with fuel to make a mechanical drill a viable option. Straight Iron won't cut it (badoom psh!)
It seam too cheap for what it does, i mean quit a bit of steel, but then every time one runs out you have enough steel to make two, so how many would you have?
the thing that comes to mind would be something similar to the Digging Machine thread however the only way i feel this would not be over powered would be to make it require significant ammounts of coal, only dig a straight tunnel, and not collect the ore, coal, diamonds, ect. so just have it dig and leave all the ore laying around and if no one picks it up then it dissappears, that way players would feel obligated to stay around it for when it digs through diamonds, gold, or other much needed resources. and they recommended have it possibly automatically place torches, agreed. automatically place mine cart tracks, no. it needs to be a handy tool that you can work near or with and just run back like 50 blocks and check on it to put more fuel and gather the resources off the ground from what it destroyed. this would also keep it from digging into areas that have not been generated yet. have if say 2 block deep as a 2x2 tunnel at the cost of 1 coal in 1 minute's time (128 block deep, 512 blocks destroyed total per stack of coal). and make it very expensive and hard to make, possibly even make part then assemble it, like 6 dimonds in the shape of a triangle for the tip, then a furnace made from obsidian, then 4 wheels made from 8 iron blocks (9bars) each. this is the only way i personally feel it would be plausable and not horribly over powered and with limited fuel would never go further then the terrain generated.

i'd probly recommend this recipie for something such as this:
...:Iron:
...:Diamond:
Or Even Iron Blocks instead of bars

This thing seems like it would take a lot of resources for something that you can do with a stone pick.
Seems like a stone pick is a lot of resources for something you can do with your hand.
A stone pick can mine stone faster than a wood pick and fists, unlike fists it can harvest stone. This drill would be automatic and could mine a strait subway untill it runs out of fuel, while you go punch some trees.
I understood the concept, I was trying to demonstrate to him that its about time efficiency, and not about "What can be done through other means".

I chuckled at this :3
Pretty much just take a furnace, slap it into a minecart, then attach the drill to the front and you're good to go!
