Thank you for proving my point. That is pure random chance. If you make a brick house out of that(not that it was enough to do so), why should we be impressed? Saying clay is rare, and therefore a status symbol is silly.
Aha. Trust me. I get clay pretty commonly. I wouldn't say it's super common, but it's not too uncommon for me.
I'll admit that was just pure random chance, yes. :tongue.gif:
But I swear to god, clay is easy for me to find.
I just HAD to put that up on Youtube though. It was pure hilarity for me. :biggrin.gif:
ok, back, after exploring and using lots of map programs, if found
sand
1 block of diamond on the surface (WTF?)
even more sand
water
dirt
and about 4 blocks of clay. -.-

Ha. Did you see my video?
I still laugh at that.
I find it hilarious how everyone else struggles to find clay, yet i spawned next to a giant crapload of it just before, and find it quite often.
Im not bragging, it's just funny to me.

Yes, we get it. Repeating yourself is not endearing in any way.

Its rare enough for people to complain about finding it.
I'm genuinly proud of my brick house, because of the effort I put into it
I'm also proud of my smoothstone castle
and my sand pyramid
and my perversly huge tree with a few houses in
and my log cottage
but still, most of theese types of homes seems to be fairly common, brick houses on the other hand appears (at least to me, I have no pure facts) uncommon, which makes me proud.
I'm sorry if this seems like bragging, but I'm still standing behind my viewpoint on this.
Status-symbol schmatus-symbol.

But why is it rare? What reason is there, either from a logical, realistic, or gameplay standpoint for it to be rare? Saying "I was lucky enough to find enough, so now I have a more unique building, so it should not be more common because that will lessen my accomplishment" is not a reason.

Who cares if you feel special about your brick house? That's not a good reason for clay to be rare. Rare clay is stupid.
The realistic one is that clay IRL is not found all around the world. Denmark is one of the countries where clay is the most common used materials for houses, but its the only country in europe where this is the case. Sure you find brick houses in other countries, but not nearly at the same rate.
The gameplay standpoint: atm the only reason it should be uncommon is to simply get people to look for it if they want it. Given an attribute like "resistant to explosion" would make it attractive in ways of usage. (maybe when a brick block where exposed to creeper or tnt it would only be redused to a half block, which would take two small bricks to repair.)
Logical, I don't have one, but for my own sake, I must admitt I really don't require one.
I'm not "telling" that it should not be different, please forgive my poor ability to express myself, but regarding how this post started, my personal opinion of clay and its use is that its fine, and does not need tweak. The brick from soil part though, is logically unreasonable.
Again, trying to be clear on this, this is a viewpoint, and I do feel entitled to it.
and to your accomplishment comment, I don't meassure up to other dedicated players, probably never will as a casual gamer, hence I do not compare my accomplishemts to others. What makes me proud is walking in my own world, knowing what time it took to make the things I have in it, knowing what I had to figure out, what to plan, what to collect to get it done. It has nothing to do with showing of to others and comparing my world to a youtube vid. Its a personal gratification.
If you want a resource to encourage people to explore, it needs to be worth exploring to get. Reeds have a use, potentially a very good one later. Cacti have a use. Clay is worse than stone. As an exploration incentive, it sucks.
Pretty weird.
I spawned a new world for fun one day, after a while I decided to go make a cactus farm where there was cactus growing.
Dug a little deep, whats that I see under water? Something blue? It was clay.
I found clay at my spawn, found them while expanding my underwater base, found them while digging for some stone.
But I somewhat agree there should be a bit more.

Not trying to pick a fight here, but that's sort of just ranting on about opinion.
Yes, everyone can have their opinion, and such.. But you seem to be trying to take down other people's opinion and broadcasting your own across the forum.
Or maybe I'm a bit delusional. I've had four hours of sleep and I'm tired as hell. I can't think properly.
..But if I'm NOT delusional, you should think about toning down the hypocrisy.
Edit: Honestly, I like clay. I like the brick house look.
Well, sorry for trying to apply game design principles to designing a game. I guess anyone who has ever disagreed with anyone in the history of the world is a hypocrite. I have already shown that, from an objective standpoint, the singular advantage of clay is aesthetics. From game design theory, aesthetic improvements have no bearing on gameplay, and hence their additional cost should be low (unless you are somehow giving things an aesthetics score and using that for something, but then you are charging for a gameplay change). So, using game design principles, I can conclude that clay needs to be more common, or become more valuable.

Right now, I can't think properly. I was woken up by a cat half way through my sleep. Stupid cat.. :sleep.gif:
But I'm just saying.. It's a matter of opinion, and nothing makes yours any more special than mine. I'm not saying mine is better. I'm saying, opinions are opinions and belong to the people that choose to .. make.. them.. Wait. Ugh. Sorry. I can't think. I don't know if what I just said made sense..
But.. Yeah. I rather like clay. I don't think it's useless. If it's useless, then reeds are useless and need to be made more common also, as they one make bookshelves which are for decoration (As far as I know), and bricks serve the same purpose.
Ok.. Let's put all the argument aside.. I don't like to argue with people over the internet. It makes me feel nerdy.. ..No offense to those who do argue. Just an opinion and stereotype that I feel applies in some cases.
But, to the point: If you all really think it's that hard to find, I guess I'm just incredibly lucky when it comes to clay, and I guess it SHOULD be more common.
Sorry for arguing. I'm quite tired, as I've pointed out a million times. I really hate that cat.. :sleep.gif:
I never knew that my rant would spur such a vast discussion. Thank you so much, my fellow minecraftians, for taking my plea seriously!
Maybe a little algorithmic tweaking should be in place, or maybe some way for clay to propagate on the layer between Sand and Dirt on coasts should be implemented--but I STILL THINK we should only keep clay if we can eventually make other stuff out of it besides just bricks.
I know there's a little bit of redundancy for, say, chickens and zombies dropping feathers, spiders dropping string that can MAKE cloth, and sheep dropping whole cloth (I have something to say for that too, but that's for another thread), and that's good! safe solutions for harvesting certain materials, I think, is a great idea. ... although gunpowder's incentive and rarity are more than well enough :biggrin.gif:
Clay is just... kind of... pointless. The game could have bricks without dedicated clay blocks, and make it work in a pretty balanced way, too--the whole Baked Dirt thing that I'm aiming for.
If clay were AT LEAST craftable as in, maybe... a bucket of water and a stack of dirt creating a stack of clay balls--then it would re-integrate dirt. That's the other side of this that I'd like to emphasize more: Although dirt IS kind of valuable in that it's THE farming surface for grass, trees, and crops, it's kind of stranded, whereas other materials that you can naturally harvest CAN be made directly into other stuff:
Sand to Glass
Cobble to Smooth Stone
Ores to Metals
having block rarity AS WELL AS baking requirement for clay is just... not right for something like Clay. Gold? definitely. But not clay.
I don't see why everything has to improve gameplay. Aestethics are important to sandbox games too. The therads on pure decorative items and blocks support this.
And since its a sandbox game, with variables, having an aestethic block thats harder to find, does not bother me at all. Like I've stated previously, its my personal opinion to disagree with altering the code for clay commonness (is that even a word?).
I do not mind that getting clay is a hassle, that just makes me happier when I'm finally done building the structure I intended it for.
I really don't know what is so hard about finding clay.
Today i went on MineCraft and i died near my home so I had to get back there and I took the boat, while sailing through the water I came across what looked like 1 block of clay, so I decided to get it. I started digging and I found about 26-28 blocks of clay.
Maybe clay is rare, but when you find it you find alot at a time, so dont whine about it so much and just leave it, if you want a brick house really bad then go dig on alot of beaches and I'm sure you will find some easily.
I have about 128 bricks now without even looking for clay, just by looking for caves, cactus and collecting sand for glass. Imo brick houses are really ugly anyway.
Then you're lucky. And you have not been paying attention, THE AMOUNT OF CLAY ON HIS MAP WAS ONLY 254 BLOCKS, LESS THAN THERE IS DIAMONDS.
I shouldn't be talking in caps I guess, it doesn't make people any more likely to understand...
Anyways, the thing about clay, is it's reaaaaalllllyyyyyyy rare usually, but it collects in HUGE masses, if there is any whatsoever.

I think there's a few blocks left...
But I still agree with you, there should be a way to make clay yourself instead of only finding it on a beach.
