In my version, the sword and spear do equal damage.
The spear has greater range.
The other difference is that the sword slashes while the spear stabs. You must have your crosshair directly over the target while stabbing with the spear, whereas the sword may hit even if your aim is off a little.

read my idea right above yours. That is a better and more dramatic change. still this could be added to my idea.

We should do away with this concern for "it cost to much". If it is better than the sword then it should cost you, do any of you realize that the War-hammer will be 1-shotting enemies? I think for that kind of power there should be a heft price.
Anyway, here is something different, Napalm

Basically, this works like lava, but you can carry it in stacks of 16 and it flows faster than lave, but slower than water. The down side is that unlike lava or water springs, Napalm runs dry shortly after being set on the ground.

Mankind a sespit of hatred and lies! - Castlevania quote
The advantage of this is that 25% is just enough to put each weapon up to the next tier if you're willing to pay twice as much, except for the diamond sword which would still take the same number of hits to kill as a diamond battleaxe preventing it from really losing it's status as an end-game weapon.

Well, after enjoying Minecraft for a long time I finally broke down and contributed back: exactly one adventure map. TRY IT NOW! YAY! Fall of Kingdoms
Yes, twice the price of a sword. I was trying to go for sort of a bearded axe but now that I think about it this might be better.

In combat yes, it handles exactly the same as a sword that does 25% more damage. In the big picture though it's a rather interesting trade-off, slightly more damage in combat in exchange for far less efficient resource management. It would probably see quite a bit of use with the easy to find resources such as wood or stone (though the wooden and stone swords didn't make much sense anyways) but with the more endgame resources such as iron and diamond it would be more sensible to make swords except in certain occasions.

It would be a throwing axe that would do the same amount of damage as your wood cutting axe if you hit a mob normally. If you right click you would throw it. It would fly about ten blocks, but less then the spear throw distance or arrow shoot distance. But the new part is it would go through two mobs. So if you had two zombies in a row you would throw it and it would got through the first zombie and hit the second one. It would hurt each one as much as an arrow.
It would disappear when it hit the second mob but if it went through the first mob and hit a wall it woulds stick in the wall and be retrievable.

With the expense it would have to go through each mob it touches or else people would purposely avoid using it against more than one mob, removing the unique use you've given it.
Although as far as throwing weapons go I think it might be best to stick with the spear.

Maybe if it could go through like 4 or 5 mobs it would be better.
I'm just tossing out idea here.

There's already an Axe in the game that's useful in combat, so there's no point in making another one. In addition, I think weapon functions need to be kept simple.

Extra knockback, which has it's pros and cons.
EDIT: Or, Extra damage vs skeletons.
A blade, an axe, a polearm and a basher; that would probably be enough for this game.
The two above posters should read the entire thread.
I did. Anything repeated is considered to be in support of related opinions. In addition, I offered alternative crafting recipies as well as alternative effects that are more simplified and thus easier to implement.
Not enough variety? Try to kill with sand or gravel, cacti, lava, water, TNT, TNT in the water, catch a monster in the cart and put a block above it. Drop the monster off the cliff. Buid a trap that will automatically do all the things listed above. Without imagination any number of features is not enough.
Also, MC is about mining, crafting and survivng. There is a variety of slaughter games to choose from.

@Kyfwana that's an awesome way to set them apart

Wait, since when are there only 2 weapons?
There's flint and steel and, the new addition, the fishing pole (trust me you can use the fishing pole as a VERY effective weapon).
All hail the tail? I guess... I dunno, I just like S&W.

I love all of those weapons.
