Anvil would be great. Little iffy on the shape, seeing as to how it'd work much better on a 4x4 grid, but regardless, would be very nice to have a new object for making specific stuff.

i was thinking like the chest makes it big would work too
i was thinking like the chest makes it big would work too
No, I think that would make it too simple. People would just harvest one more log and make a double workbench rather than stop at the one. I like the idea of an anvil. Because you actually have to got out and find iron before you can make it. Not the greatest means of pacing the game, but we can work from there.
My idea is to make throwing weapons have different range depending on what it is crafted from. For example, gold is much heavier than iron, so an iron throwing axe would have more range than a gold one.

well i mean use that so that way you can make an anvil using a 6x6 work bench = 6x6
now we need a coffee table... and a mug.... and coffee...
I can only imagine what sort of awesome things coffee could do for this game. Maybe something as simple as healing 1.5 hearts and making you move 25% faster for 2 minutes (equivalent to about 4-6 hours I believe). Would be especially useful to get away from a horde or Creepers.

i dont like reading so i only read your primary post
WHATS THE POINT OF OTHER WEAPONS???
we have sword... and bow/arrow
they boost damage
why make something boost damage more???
maybe its heavier so it slows you down?? or attack slower??? STILL WHATS THE POINT ANYWAY
this. Seriously most of your ideas just seem like a bunch of nerds saying "OMG I WanT To HaVE a BatTle AXe!!!!!!" Or "We need ninja weapons!" and "Knife plus back-stab = instakill!!!!11" It's stupid. If this was implemented everyone would carry around each weapon, so if one weapon was weak to another the player would just switch. We don't need unnecessary crap for minecraft to be fun. So go ahead now, flame me just because i rained on your stupid nerdy parade.

Muncher is right, listen to him, he can cure the blind and make paraplegics walk.
Well it's not like we can add Red Bull or anything. Anyways, back to the type, new weapons~
Crossbow!
I'm sure this has been in many, many topics, but meh, who cares, this is my take on the Crossbow.
Recipe
Like before, = String.
Pricey? Yer damn right. For good reason! Unlike good ole bows and arrows, Crossbows deal more damage! And have a bit more knockback! However, they need to be reloaded, which means after each shot, you need to wait a good second before firing again.
For sake of simplicity, we could keep normal arrows to fire, but personally, I don't like the idea. After all, crossbows fire bolts which are specially crafted to be fired with a crossbow. So, I'd like to suggest this for a crossbow bolt.

Where the iron is, that'd be how strong the bolt is.
Unlike arrows, creating bolts yield 8 per combine.
Before I get people raging "too expensive" and stuff like that, I'm saying that a diamond bolt would either 1-hit kill or 2-hit depending on the mob.
Easy calculation for damage:
Crossbow = 1.5x Bow + Arrow damage.
Add arrow to to calculate additional damage. 2x, 3x, or 5x damage.
Blah blah blah melee weapons are more efficient etc. well yeah, but the reason ranged weapons exist is because it's much less risky to die to a mob, especially mobs that explode or shoot arrows at you.
Side note: Man this recipe looks goofy as hell, would look so much better on a bigger grid XD
@muncher:I find it amusing that you are conforming to your sig perfectly
Also, Notch has said that he will be focusing more on completely new features as opposed to things like different kinds of arrows. This means that we will likely not see any new weapons soon if ever.
A while back i made a thread about knives and daggers and their uses.
i want knives so bad.
SO BAD.
All these ideas are pretty cool.
Also when i suggested knives i said that it did slightly more damaged when from behind, but not instakill because that is freaking retarded. That belongs in TF2 not minecraft
Oh and heres a slingshot recipie that might make more sense

although it should still fire cobblestone.
This would definatly help with weapon creation. Like making a battle axe would be the same recipe for a normal axe, but on an anvil.

seems wierd yes but you get my point
It would then become an actual table 8D!!

Where the iron is, that'd be how strong the bolt is.
Wood: +50% damage.
Iron: +100% damage.
Gold: +50% damage.
Diamond: +300% damage.
