EDIT:
The sifter would work by allowing a player to place sand, gravel or dirt (which by itself has no use, other than being a building material), with a bucket of water to sift out any hidden, valuable materials. This would be a random, percentage-based event. For example, out of 128 blocks of dirt sifted, one might only acquire a single bar of iron and maybe 2 or 3 pieces of coal or flint. The highest-yield result would be clay, which would only be 2 out of 5 blocks sifted. A bucket of water would last for about 64 uses, or one full stack of dirt.
Does the dirt disappear if you get nothing out of it? If not its basically a way to never mine again. Just plough dith through your sifter for hours in the complete safety of your own home. Even gravel is a bit common. I do like the idea of sifting for gold... iron etc. Idk.
The dirt would effectively "turn into" something you sifted out of it, but yea... it's gone forever. Perhaps, because of the abundance of dirt, percentages of decent yields could be reduced further.
I think you would have to toy with the rates a little bit. But I do like the idea of using dirt. This lets you get rid of all that landscaping dirt that no one wants. (sorry Dirt )
Make it require at LEAST one bucket of water PER sifting (as it's EXTREMELY easy to make an infinite water pool), although perhaps even have it require a few buckets of water for a full stack of material. Perhaps have sand require the least amount of water (one bucket for 32 units sifted), and dirt requiring the most with one bucket making eight blocks get sifted. Either way, it'll need to be balanced a bit to make the rates decent without being totally crap, but yeah, a nice idea.
Although I have lots of uses for dirt.... But eh, I'm strange.

Fire And Ice
Some say the world will end in fire
Some say in ice
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire
But if it had to perish twice
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice
Me and Fm4k came up with this idea today. But we differed a little on the details. When we were discussing it I explained it like this. Lets say you can have a stack of 100 dirt for simplicity. So out of that 100% you would get:
approx 50%-nothing-blocks lost
approx 40%-Clay...if your like me and have been playing the same level in alpha for months you know my pain when searching for clay.
(although that may just be too much clay maybe 60-30)
4% Coal
4% Flint
1.5% Iron
.499999% Gold (Hopefully by then it will have some use)
.000001% Diamond (1 dia/5000 dirt isn't game breaking in my opinion.)
Now as for the water used. to make this not OP i wish we could stack water to make this not available right away forcing you to get significant amount of iron. otherwise 1 bucket would have to have a decent limitation on how much it could sift. But I also don't want to penalize the hard worker who would rather load up the sifter with a lot of gathered materials and put an effort in to see their rewards. But I'm sure some will debate that, and that is fine with me.
Of course this would have to be tested thoroughly to not be exploited and keep players from ever venturing into deep dark caves.
Now the idea that was brought up of also sifting other materials..I love it. And the result %s could be changed. of course more flint from gravel and sand etc etc.

I'd much prefer to get more clay just by making clay more abundant.
I like this idea.
Gravel should only give flint, coal, and iron.
Sand should only give flint and coal.
What if sand, could give shells too :ohmy.gif:
I was imagining something similar to:

would be great, and it's realistic, I, like the others, also suggest it filters dirt, snow, gravel and sand.
would be a great addition with no downsides other than a great secondary system to find things, for the hoarder I am, I would love this.
as long as you keep the original block after wards!
lol Can you keep dirt after you've sifted it? :wink.gif: I feel like sifting it should destroy the sifted block
