I will be collecting suggestions here, there are many uses for the little addition known as redstone, but it has its limits that make many traps impossible to achieve (that we really wish existed). Please post ideas and comments about these. Also, not all of these are common. The title is a lie.
Floodgates. A hatch that behaves like a door, but lets water rush past it when open. This would be used for drowning and lava traps, dams, factory conveyor belts, and more.

Hatch. This block needs to be connected to another block on the side to be placed. This would be used for sand traps, ladder climbing, and trapdoors. It lets blocks go past it when it is released, which lets it be used as a vertical floodgate. It is activated either by redstone (you'd have to put redstone above your ceiling), or by clicking it.

Light Panel. When a light source is directly near it (including sunlight and redstone torches), it activates, allowing for time-sealing doors and such.

= redstone
Waterwheel. Lets water go through, and activates when it is touched by rushing water. Working with floodgates, this could make interesting traps. Not only that, it makes nice looking decoration. Activates redstone next to it.

(this may need to be tweaked; a lot)
Lavawheel (why the hell not). Exactly like waterwheel, but with lava. A spinning metal wheel of doom in your lava moat will bring fear to the invaders of your castle (disclaimer: it probably wont). In example, this could power a floodgate, letting the same lava powering the wheel into the room. To make it more balanced, it has an obsidian core.

Tripwire. It must be connected to two redstone wires to work, and it's less visible then plates. If the player "trips" over it, it activates something for one second. It is a mostly transparent, but is a white line.

]" title="-<->" /> = string
NOTE: Tripwire should not be added until there is an easier way to obtain string.
I like the hatch idea Gorden but I think the iron hatch should be switch activated only to keep it in line with how the iron doors work. I'd also add a wooden hatch recipe that would be click activated like the wooden doors:

That recipe is already taken for pressure plates, which is why I used iron. Good idea, maybe sticks instead...?
I think the waterweel shouldnt be in this redstuf section, i would much rather see it implemented with gears and such in enginering (a selection of blocks and such that conveys power, unlike redstuff wich conveys information)
I agree. I think the distinction between redstone and mechanisms could make the game absolutely awesome.
But yeah, trapdoors would be cool. But I'd like to be able to create wooden trapdoors D:
When current flows to the igniter, it spawns a fire block above it. Anything above the igniter is burned.
Since gunpowder is scarce (And since there's likely a continuous current going into the igniter, which could burn off fuel too fast), I was thinking this would be fuelless?
Heck, while I'm at it, why not add in a current transformer that can pulse current at user-defined intervals? Here's a design for that, too!
Right clicking the transformer prompts the user how many times a second should the current ping through. Of course, lower than 1 values would be accepted

Feather is string (or if applicable, tripwire)

Did you find a light-grey block around sand that dropped four light-grey blobs when punched? That's called Clay.
