Welcome to the third installment of the Ironman Challenge! I hope you have played the other two already, so you know not to get your hopes up! As you may have assumed from the title of the challenge seed, this challenge revolves around iron and the seed "Iron Man".
This is a timed challenge, meaning the player with the fastest time and completes the challenge will be the winner! You can also be ranked based on how far you got before you died, but you will be under everyone who completed it.
Protip: Just because this is a timed challenge, doesnt mean you should go storming into every cave you see right as you spawn. Not being prepared could easily cost you your spot on the winners list!
(This will probably be a shortened post and may be elaborated later, as I had most of it done and I lost power and lost the entire post. Sorry if I leave anything out in my haste to get this challenge up for everyone.)
The Challenge
On the "Iron Man" seed, obtain every single iron based item as quickly as possible. You have to get everything from simple iron ore to powered minecarts!
Setup
1. Get some way to keep track of your time. Recording/uploading a video is the best way, but using a stopwatch or timer program can work as well. I have not found a successful timer overlay to use while playing and for screenshot proof, but there are many that can be added when editing your video. (Modders, can you make something that displays the time played in the world? PLEASE?!?)
2. Create a new world with the seed "Iron Man" like in the following image:
3. When you spawn, start the timer/recording and the challenge has begun! For those who like to wait for the world to generate and load first, you can wait to start the timer when you leave the spawn point.
Rules
1. 1 life. If you die the challenge is over.
2. Play on hard difficulty. Anything else will not be ranked.
3. To win, you must posses every item in the game that involves iron or iron products (yes, storage and powered minecarts too!). You must have every item in your inventory at the same time for it to count. See the iron hit list to follow for all of the required items.
4. You may not do strip/branch mining to obtain materials. Caves are more dangerous, and more fun!
5. You CAN use torches, and any item for that matter.... although I say that with some sadness.
Iron Hit List
The basics: iron ore, iron ingot, iron block = 11 iron
Equipment: iron tools, iron sword, iron armor = 35 iron
Infrastructure: rails, minecart, powered minecart, storage minecart = 21 iron
The rest: bucket, flint and steel, compass, iron door = 14 iron
Total required iron: 81
Caves
There are many caves to be found, and these are just a suggestion to get you going on the challenge quickly. There are many more, and one in particular that goes nearly straight down to lava level, but I have only found it once and didn't save the coords.
1. 113, 64, 148. Lots of branches to explore here. Some more expansive and interesting than others.
2. 146, 69, 145. A couple different paths to take, that lead pretty far down. Some water to help you down (or push you into )
3. -111, -133. Small opening, big drop. Lots of large tunnels.
4. -90, 77, -39. A big hole in the ground leading to lots of large tunnels. This is where I did my first and only serious attempt while making the challenge.
(Again, forgive me, as I lost some of the coordinates in the outage. I'll add more as I remember/find them again, or when people post them!)
Ranking
Winners Bracket
Anyone who successfully obtained every iron item. These players have beaten the challenge, and will be ranked by time.
Crafters Bracket
Anyone who crafted an iron item, but did not beat the challenge. Ranked by number of iron crafted into items. (iron block = 9 iron, iron sword = 2 iron)
Miners Bracket
Anyone who mined iron, but did not craft it into anything. Ranked by the number of iron mined.
Achievements
I do not have any achievements as of yet, and am very open to suggestions. I plan on making the achievements subtract time so they'll only count if you beat the challenge. If you have ideas of achievements please post them!
Wouldn't hurt to pop in to the modding requests area to see if someone can create something that would support multiple features for these challenges.
Oh a bit on a tangent. And for other challenges that have the 'no torch' rule linking some guides on how to make videos with 'night vision' so that people can see should be really helpful for those watching.
Probably going to take a run at this and post a commentary video, (might do it for 404 challenge first)
Anyways, to make it easier for players to see just how big the challenge is:
Iron Man Iron Hit List!
Iron Block = 9
Iron Axe = 3
Iron Pickaxe = 3
Iron Shovel = 1
Iron Hoe = 2
Flint 'n Steel = 1
Bucket = 3
Compass = 4
Sword = 2
Iron Helmet = 5
Iron Chestplate = 8
Iron Leggings = 7
Iron Boots = 4
Minecart x3 = 15
Rails = 6
Iron Door = 6
+ a chest and a furnace for the powered/storage minecarts.
Total = 79 Iron Ingots, which will also roughly require 20~30 pieces of coal to smelt them all
Swapping any of the iron items for a diamond item instead adds some kind of bonus, IE if you have all items - iron sword and diamond sword instead, thats some kind of bonus thingy?
Never mining any coal, and instead fueling your furnace(s) with only logs.
Also you might want to deal with the potential of people scanning for dungeons in order to "find" some of the iron items and save time. Just saying some of those things have like 10 ingots and a bucket, thats like 10% of the challenge done right there :x
****, I did this my first try, but I had to pause my game and stopwatch app when my cat got into something, and I guess I forgot to unpause the stopwatch. :sad.gif: Something like 45 minutes? An hour? Damn cat.
ETA: Just finished doing the challenge again. I don't think I did as well as the first time, but I got my time: 67:17.

Ok, figured I'd take a break from 404 and try this one. Now, I only have a little proof, so call me a liar if you want, but I did it in roughly 33 minutes. I used an online stopwatch. It is a tiny bit off because I paused to run to the bathroom or look at the list a couple times along the way, but I never forgot to turn it back on. So it is just a little off from me having to change from internet to minecraft and back each time I paused. So my experience(I go WAY too in depth, so if you just want the little proof I have, scroll to the bottom for endgame screenies):
I started up and had an adrenaline rush(cause I'm a nerd and this shiz makes me happy) as I ran around to grab a few trees and put together my dungeon delving kit. I made a bed thinking I might need it(didn't), grabbed some leather for armor(forgot to craft it), killed some pigs for pork(none dropped...), and found a surface coal vein for my coal. Spent a minute or two looking for a good cave, and finally found one. Immediately I hit a zombie spawner and got my bucket as well as some bread. Went down the hall, chestless zombie spawner. Fought my way down gathering resources, ate said bread, and stopped to smelt iron. I thought I was gonna finish right then till I remembered I needed a compass and as such, redstone.. As I was building armor and a sword for my final descent a creeper pops up behind me. I freak the hell out, spin around and smack him with whatever it was in my hand(pickaxe?) He falls into the hole left by me mining a coal vein and I escape with my life(minus 1 and a half hearts, thank god I wasn't closer!). So I finish prepping and pack up my iron, coal, workbench, and furnace. I find a waterfall that carries me a good fifteen blocks lower. After clearing the zombies and creepers from the room below(a nice 4 block high overhang made this easy) I notice light coming from down a hall! I run to find a lava fall going right by... redstone! =D I block off the lava for safety reasons and dig down to the redstone. Now all I need is to smelt a little more iron.. I notice some iron hanging over a lake of lave as well as a third dungeon. I bridge over to the dungeon and find it's a skelly dungeon... god I hate those things. I fight my way through 3 or 4 skellys(there was a nice corner they kept getting stuck on so I only took around 3-4 hearts damage) and lit up the dungeon. The lava almost did that for me, but the corners made just enough darkness. The chest yields 3 cocoa beans, a saddle, and string, who cares.. but it also had 3 iron bars(I know.. kinda cheating, that's basically 6 iron from dungeons), and another loaf of bread! So I scarf down that bread and get mostly back to full health, and set up camp(as seen in screenshots below). I get my furnace going and bridge over to the aforementioned iron(I also had some fun mining the floor our from under a few zombies. They had a nice bath in the refreshing lava). After a little more exploring and iron gathering(I also hit a small vein of diamonds. Odd, for once I wasn't excited to see diamonds. I feel guilty) I get back to the impotent dungeon and craft up the last few items. :happy.gif: Minimize game, pause stopwatch, and another rush of adrenaline!
Soo here are the 3 shots I took.
First one, my inventory showing all the items.
Second one, my time. I know this is easily fakeable(word? No, probably not.), but I don't have any video capturing software or anything and I didn't think I'd actually do well at all.
Finally I figured I'd show my f3 info just for the sake of it. I mean, you can go to those coords to prove it is on Iron Man and such.. yeah. >.>
is there any way u can make it multiplayer? would love to achieve this all with some friends.
I'm pretty sure that if when you create the multiplayer server, you put "Iron Man" in the "seed=" part of the properties file it ought to create this world as your multiplayer world just like in singleplayer. Hopefully that works for you! =]
This challenge hasn't been updated since 1.4, but I'm sure those will be added if Neoxx feels like it. I probably woulda done those anyways, but I didn't really think about maps till I was already deep underground, and I didn't wanna lose 20 minutes finding my way back up to get reeds and then all the way back down. I figure either way people choose to do it is good, but then again I'm not all over the whole leaderboards idea either.6

Mine, I had to divide the video into 4 parts because Youtube only allows 10 min a video, I also sped them up to double speed so it is faster... so close

I'll also put up a request for a timer and see if anyone is interested over there. Maybe we can get one to use in this and other challenges.

Idea:
Iron Hitlist
Kill creatures with an iron sword.
There are no points as it's just a checklist, all creatures count once. Pigmen may end some runs... let's see some ghast fishing.

Fun
Interesting, I'm actually posting on the first page of an IRON MAN CHALLENGE THREAD!
What's up? I'm the proud co-owner of a little ClassiCube server called Minebuild.
Click here to go to the thread for it!
Sometimes, you just need a little more cave.
Only made 1 furnace the entire playthrough.

Dungeon Cheater - Get a bucket/iron out of a dungeon.
Screw Iron - Find diamonds before iron.
Inefficient Usage - Use a lava bucket to power your furnace, but lose the bucket in the process (has this been fixed?)
Suicidal - Jump into a pit of lava when you have at least 2 more things to craft.
Almighty Slayer - Slay 20 evil mobs with your iron sword.
Meh.
ETA: Just finished doing the challenge again. I don't think I did as well as the first time, but I got my time: 67:17.
Umm Coal makes 8, So it would be 10 :wink.gif:
