There are so many glass item elevator designs out there that their creators claim are 1.10 compatible, but their not. Here's one design by K1 Inc. that I've changed so it will work in 1.10.
I was experimenting with this design, found a couple issues.
The system works great if there are not a ton of items but for a continuous item stream, like from a large mob farm, the dropper will never stop, so the piston will not fire and items will despawn.
If there is more than one type of item, they can collide to where one type of item is in a bad position and the piston pushes it up directly causing the accelerated item through blocks problem.
I kinda expected there would be issues, the design I based this off would stop items from entering the dropper while it was dropping the items, but it would still jam on me all the time.

I open the forums and to my surprise, the first post is by a fellow server member! :-) Nice design, man

I am working on a design to address these issues.
Very nice work.
...Or could you use a dropper elevator? Am I the only one who uses a dropper elevator?
Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
Those tend to be unreliable on servers but I use them when I only need to transport a couple blocks up :-)

Dropper elevators are fine if you're moving items up just a few blocks, but for long distances they just create too much lag.
