I made this same post before, but I don't think people quite understood what I was talking about so I decided to add an image. Basically I want to make this machine using command blocks instead of redstone. There are a few reason why I want to do this.
1. The places that hold the payment and products are awkward to get to. It would be nice to have them right next to each other in an easily accessible place.
2. In order to set up the machine you need to give up 23 of the payment your asking for and put it in the payment testing hoppers. I would prefer to only need 1 of the item at most instead of 23.
3. I would like it to be a little more compact.
4. Even if it's out of stuff to give you, it still takes your money. No one likes when a vending machine steals yours money.
5. This one is minor but it would be nice to use a barrel instead of a dropper for the user interface once 1.14 is released. I just like the way they look. Currently I need to use a dropper.
If anyone knows how I can achieve this, I would be so thankful.
You could use the"data"command to detect if the hopper has any items in it, if the the statement is "yes I do have I do have items in me", then you could attach a command block that detects if the answer was "yes" by using the "SuccessCount" NBT tag. Then attach a conditional chain command block(So when the command block before it(which was the one with the "Success" nbt tag in it) sends the signal to run the code.) the code in that block will run the rest of the code for the shop..
i think that will work... hopefully that made sense and will help you get you started in the right direct! it only kinda solves the detection of an item in the hopper, but at least its something....

I'm almost done, but consider the amount of work, I'd like to record it as well. Do you mind?
Ok, I'm finally done. Took me some time to fix the bugs...
Wow this is so awesome! Thank you so much! I'm using this mainly for my realm. The main city for the realm isn't really done yet but your welcome to join.

I don't mind. It would make it easier for me to understand.

Don't mind if I do. I'm alone this Thanksgiving.
