Every once in awhile when doing a scoreboard command like the following, the game thinks a selector such as @a[rx=10,rxm=-10] is a player. Upon finally creating a thread, when I pasted in the command it appeared like so:
/scoreboard players set @a[rx=10,rxm=-10] levitation 0
Once I removed the box, the command worked as intended and I was wondering under what circumstances that appears there, and if it is a bug or intended. I am currently in 1.9, and I have noticed similar behavior in past versions.

Are you using a Mac? I believe there's a bug for Mac's specifically where pressing keys in a certain manner will input that hidden character. Not sure if that happens on other operating systems, but it's definitely a bug.
You wouldn't happen to know the key combination? It might be a mac keyboard preference thing which allows me to add special symbols by using control, option, and command key combos, but I am still not sure.

I think it was command and any of the arrow keys. Would probably have to experiment around, but I'm pretty sure it was the command key.
Great! It turns out and up or down arrow key will mess it up, but the side keys work as a control side key would work for you I think. It moves the cursor to the next space.

Also, I feel like sometimes this happens in other commands, and I just can't see it.

Yea, I'm on a mac. Just found the bug report and unfortunately it looks like it is resolved. D: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-44517
