Might be a little too late, but if you're only using solid blocks for the structures you could use
/execute @e[type=PrimedTnt] ~ ~ ~ /clone ~1 ~ ~ x y z
to clone the block next to it to a certain area, and have a repeater pointing into that area, and have a command block on the other side with an /entitydata to detonate the TNT. This was inspired by Sethbling's light cycle minigame mechanics. You would have the command clone blocks on each of the four sides of the TNT to detect walls on all sides. This requires no Armorstands and is probably a lot less laggy than the other ideas.
