That was something I threw together pretty fast. I'm trying to fulfill the self-powered part, because Redstone Miku's design lets us have huge luxury ships with the simple pilot routine we've had for a while.
The problem with pushing clocks I think is you can't push extended pistons and when not extended, there is empty space. It would take a large contraption to push the clock, and then something even larger to push that and so on and so forth.
I think we're all taking a wrong approach to this piston clock thing, the answer is minecart clocks. I tried to build one but couldn't. But I am sure one of you could.
Ugh... the problem is that the only way to power the pistons that move the device would be from any direction but the front, but the front is the only place where your blocks can be. If they go anywhere else, they won't be moved by the pistons. If you try putting them above, then you'd have to have another piston engine set to move those, meaning more powering above that, etc. If only there were some way to stick blocks together...

I have suggested glue but someone pointed out that someone at Mojang said that glue would never be added. It's a shame. I was excited.
I found how to make something it is a minecart riding on an invincible chicken all you need do to fly is hit the chicken the knockback will propel you up and forward depending on which way you are facing and if you have a knockback level 10 item you can go forward easily.
I hope this helps I do not know how to post pix though.

Yea that works, however, that's not self-powered and not a machine. But the challenge is impossible without using entities so this is about as far you'r gonna get.
That would require MCEdit, which is technically not vanilla Minecraft. That's probably the only viable option besides the floating boats trick (assuming that still works) :/
If you need MCEdit for something, it doesn't make it not vanilla, it's just not survival, but since you don't change any of the game code it's still vanilla.
This can sort of mean that you can use mods, because if you can make a mod which adds new code instead of editing current code, by your description is still vanilla

Use of mods or edits to change the structure of the code does not constitute Vanilla.
Vanilla means Pure .. just as it does in real life.. Pure with no added flavors.
The conflict to this assumption comes from making things with an editor that are "Vanilla compatible". Those things are compatible with the Vanilla client but they are not Vanilla "as they are" and cannot be accomplished in the game without "added flavor".

Vanilla isn't really plain as it is Vanilla flavoured hence vanilla essence
That's a very good point Vanilla is a flavor of it's own, it's a pure one with no artificial additives.
When something is deemed Vanilla Compatible (such as creations made with MCedit) they are not considered to be Vanilla, just compatible with it.
We have to maintain this separation as they are not one and the same.
MCedit isn't looked at in the same manner as a traditional mod only because it doesn't add anything to the code that doesn't already exist, but that does not mean MCEdit isn't a mod, it most certainly is.
MCedit allows us to make modifications which are defined as "edits" to the game and is a third party tool.
Hence why things that are made with it, are usually referred to as Chocolate or Strawberry rather than outright calling it a mod because it's different than the traditional definition of mods [where we use or add things, that aren't there normally].
Hence the separation of 100% Vanilla versus 100% Vanilla Compatible..
I realize you know the difference but it seemed like you were defending MCedit by saying it is Vanilla when it clearly is not but rather it is Compatiblewith Vanilla.
In 1.7 you can use the /summon command to summon mobs riding eachother, so a boat riding a bat or EnderDragon will be totally possible in vanilla.
/summon Boat {Riding:{id:Bat}}
I don't count commands as vanilla. Whilst technically they are vanilla I see them as cheating regardless of the use. I don't use any commands in any games unless it is to fix a glitch or a cheat map

[Self-deleted.]
edit.
I just tried it again and it doesn't work for more than 5 or so blocks
well, i have been doing random researchs for hours without result. any new thing?

I know that mods aren't vanilla, just making a comment against his logic.

Yes, yes it is
And yeah I just like to split hairs with everything
Lmao awesome, I tried to put a Horse on an invisible Bat (so it'd be like Pegasus lol) and the game crashed.. sigh lol -.
