I'm pretty sure they're facing how you'd expect, but the device needs certain lengths of pulses. I think, I haven't gotten it to work consistently.

Thats true, if you flick them slowly. Now this is my understanding of the process (It uses a BUD glitch)




in this setup, the lever is powering the block and the piston IS powered, but it requires a neighboring block update to actually extend. Now it takes 2 critically timed lever clicks to make the engine move.
intitial set up:
= lever (on)
= sticky piston
= sticky piston head
= normal piston
Then flick the lever off for one tick and turn it back on. You have just moved up one block. I am not sure why this works, but I think that when the power is off, the normal piston retracts in, then it pops out of block 36 form and updates itself just as the power is turned back on.
If you still doubt me, make this setup:
= redstone




You power on the redstone, then use some kind of pulse limiter to turn off the redstone for just ONE tick, I just made a redstone contraption that could do this with a button press. Does the concept work now? (slapping a 1-clock, repeater based, will also move the pistons)

To use the vertical movement device, just click 5 times very quickly. This is easier if you're on a laptop with both a regular mouse and a mousepad.

Just try using redstone with a one tick OFF stage, it will show the concept to you (look at my previous post). Also, the lever method has two fail points, it requires practice to overcome them.
1. if you flick it too fast, the normal piston will detach from the sticky piston.
2. if you flick it too slow, the BUD glitch will not activitate.

Anyway, has anyone managed to propel more than 2 engines with this technique?
-edit- to OP: can we have a engine type section in the OP? Like the different kinds of lever drive (like RH's barge drive and this BUD glitch drive) and redstone torch drive (I made a redstone torch drive a page or two ago)?

There´s a small problem if the shuttle leaves the ship, but you can solve it if somebody stays on the ship to push the displaced pistons in the front back. This problem is also solved if you move the shuttle back to the ship. It´s also not possible to move in the opposite direction of the shuttle with the big ship when the shuttle has left.

And do you know any asthetical block except glowstone that don´t attach to nether fences? I wanted to create something you can shoot through from the battleship.

instead of having a fence not attatch to a block, doors might work (i havnt tried it) if not, try glass

I was actually gonna suggest a submarine and possibly even a mole-like machine to tunnel through the earth.

Or rather, that it seems impossible to add a section to the submarine that will keep water out of the front section.

The ocean knife! Of course, this could easily be improved upon, but oh well, it's awesome and might actually have a few applications. Especially if a sponge is installed. Naturally, the front section has to be replaced, or else a a version that is mostly above water needs to be developed.

And now, the cool-as-heck but not very refined mini-sub:


It uses Abdiel's design, but powered by torches. Not terribly original but still cool looking and fun to ride.

On a semi-unrelated note, we could cheat a little by using the macro mod to create an automated script, enabling faster-than-human flight with any of the flying machines thus far.

Not what found, I tried all 4 directions of pushing a block and rail at the same time but no matter which rail or piston I tried it won't work. Though on the vertical movement detector and normal rails will stay on when pushed up but not pulled down without breaking, yet powered rails won't be pushed up without breaking and break when pulled down as well. Also all three can be pushed down but only detector and normal rail can be pulled up without breaking, but then you have floating rails until something causes an update and they break.

Edit: A minecart can travel across these floating rails but you can't destroy or move the piston that put it in place. Also I found something interesting about pistons, not sure if its been done before but here:

Then the last lever and they all retract but the block updates cause them all to break except the last one. Not sure if this can be used but I found it interesting.

I haven't been following this thread. But couldn't you use somehow use bud switches so that the updating of blocks would move it?

Edit: Oh wait...you can't move Bud switches.

I really want to find a way so im going to test with subs and stuff and hopefully go on a server and test with a crew.

Found that a minecart on the track won't be pulled up with the track. Limits the uses a bit. Also if there are tracks around the track being moved they will slope when it is pulled up but break when it is pushed down.
