Like YetAnotherGuy said, it work with stairs in general, not just upside down ones. I also made a simple OR gate using the stairs. If you can share other gates designs, using the less boats possible, it would be appreciated!
Well. i have three things to say after i built one.
1. There is a way to make it more stable, just make the clock really really fast
2. The range for this thing is roughly 30-40 blocks away from the piston, although it gets very unreliable at this stage (this may be different for everyone)
sjc1000:
1-I had trouble with fast clocks, can you show your setup?
2- The thing is stable far away, just did a test at 180 blocks and everything worked fine, but...
3-I love you! New discovery: you can now detect item entities (the little spinning blocks when you trow them on the ground)!
If you are far enough away (like... 180 blocks) the item entities will activate the receiver, like if it was in your inventory, but only if you look at it. New era of trap designs! activate something by looking in a general direction
Need more testing, but awesome.

Updated the OP with a video. This is almost as nice as the original thing!
If someone have a good thread title name, please share...
Update 2: in my setup, the distance where the "item on the floor glitch" happen is 36 blocks. If I'm 35 blocks from the receiver, the glitch wont work, and I'll get a signal. So its a way to instantly pinpoint a player, as long as you have an item on the ground.
So far, using this, we have:
-wireless redstone.
-cheap remotes.
-Instant player detection.
-Player looking direction detector. (in lack of a better name...)
I vote for this for the Minecraft Glitch of the Week (someone should do a youtube serie with that, would be amazing )
Ahh, what i mentioned earlier is no longer happening with mine... these machines seem to be very iffy, maybe because of the boats, they are never in the same spot twice.. Yeah the fast clock in no longer working for me, if it happens to work again you'll be the second person to know
Fot the boats, just place them on the block between the piston and the pressure plate, and no need to touch them after that, they should be in a correct position
And who love stable machine? Random behavior that make no sense FTW!
the clock is so fast that when you dont have the item, itl move the stairs to fast to accidentally push it, and when you do have the item it'l
Move it so fast that it does not accidentally get un-powered.
Also when you have the item, and Hit F1 to hide you HUD, it thinks you dont have the item, Like you said "Visible Inventory" when you hide it its no longer visible.
Ive just tested the total range of mine and it goes 270 Blocks, WTF. but instead of turning off itl start flashing, but that can be fixed by an AND gate. MWA HA HA, 270 blocks though THATS AMAZING
EDIT: WOW, turns out its not the distance that makes it flash, its my machine... ANYWAY, NEW THING "if you have stairs in your Visible inventory and you place a stair block and look directly at it, it will de-activate like you dont have stairs in your inventory, Oh and if you walk on it :P"
Nice design. It have the big advantage to work with upside down half-slabs.
Mine was... unstable with them.
yeah, 270 blocks (more or less) mean it will work as long as the chunk is loaded. Past 270 blocks (or so), no redstone works, so there was little chances...
Edit: even better: its fast enough that you dont have synchronisation problems anymore. Awesome
For the "walk on stairs" thing, I mentionned it earlier ( post 11). Its nice, but I cant think of any way to use it for something... As it will only works when you have the stairs in your visible inventory... A way to desactivate the thing, maybe... but you could just drop the stair...

Ohh yeah, mine will do the flashing thingy when i put them upside down, ha if i put them the right way up NO MORE FLASHING awesome, now i think mine is the best design
Yep. It seem the fastest the clock is, the better result we get, with a minimum of 2 ticks (or else the pistons have a strange behavior...).
Just make sure your clock is log off/log in friendly, but its not a problem.
Can someone please test the "if I drop an item on the ground, it still count if I look at it and I'm farther than 35 blocks" thing? To be sure its not an isolated situational bug (see the last video of the OP).
Oooooh, i dont think it is log off/Log in friendly ill need to do something about that, and if its over 35 blocks and its in your view, itl work, im not sure how far this lasts though.. ooh we could make a painting trap, you look at the picture AND YOU DIE
Sorry for the lack of updates lately, Internet issues.
@the_optimist: Thanks for your work! The flickering is cause by the clock being too slow. The problem with your design (awesome btw, I will use it in other things) is that it's not the good speed for the pistons. I made a clock with a piston, wich is the fastest you can use with this design. I also didnt had synchronisation problems after using these. Heres a video, showing how to build it:
You could also make your floor out of, say, stone bricks, but have one tile be an upside-down stone brick stair, instead. Put it off to the side of your chest, so it's unlikely that people will step on it when trying to steal your stuff. If you open up the chest and see the stair, then a trap will trigger, but standing on the tile will prevent the trap from activating!

2. Screw adventure maps, I'm using this for a lock system in SMP! "How'd you open that door from way back there?!" "I looked at it juuuuust right."
Also your tutorial, when I threw down stairs the torch started pulsing instead of staying on
Seem to be an unrelated minecraft bug. Can you try to reproduce it?
