The first comparator is unnecessary -- just remove it and the dust next to it, and you can shorten the circuit.
The reason you need the extra dust at the end is that a subtraction 1-clock never actually turns off the dust in front of the comparator, it only reduces its signal strength -- only the dust next to the comparator varies between on and off (and any trails of dust you add long enough to get the reduced signal strength to zero).
I might have misunderstood you but when I changed the circuit I no longer got the 2, and only 2, rapid pulses I wanted. But anyway, I can afford the extra comparator.

Uh .. if you're looking for a very fast 2 pulse or rather a 1.5pulse for 'retracting lava dispensers', this is by far the very best design you will find. It's not only compact at 1 wide, the dispenser array can be tiled.
This image is showing the back side, so that you can see the repeaters in the array.
The 1.5 pulse is the tiny 1 wide, 3 tall, 4 long part on the left end. (it's 4 long because of the torch)
Technically it could be considered 2 wide because of the Button, though this all depends where you put it as it isn't even required, the input could be from anything; so long as it goes in from that end.
(ie: with a NOT Gate meeting the input torch etc etc)
I want to say this is TrazLander's design though I don't believe that's correct. I believe the pulser is Etho's design and the Dispenser array is Texelelf's design, anyways this array is much better.
Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.
The repeater can be set to 3 or 4 ticks. Lever, button, whatever. Why do you think that produces a 1.5-tick pulse?
Ok fine it's 1 leading into 2 which can be made to be 2 really easily , I believe you said this yourself in a previous thread with the very same design on a prior post of mine.
Add a block over top of the output Torch and it is 2, it pulses "twice" on the array 'with or without' that block though, this is what 'dispenses' and 'retracts' the lava.

Way off topic here but it's a mini moment in history and a great time to log out lol

Ah, got it. Thanks for the picture.
