Ok Redstone men, women and nerds everywhere, I have devised a challenge for you! (That I've been working on for the last two weeks and not getting anywhere.
Should you chose to accept it, your task is:
Have a minecart go through a horizontal piston door. (Not Vertical, that is easy, it must be a horizontal door.
That means, you must launch a minecraft (or set it in motion), so that it will then cause a piston door to open, then it must some how travel through that door reliably, and continue onwards. The door must also close behind it. (it must also, work in reverse.)
Good look.
*My brain feels like mush, from this.

What do you mean by a horizontal door? Do you mean the pistons in the door have to retract sideways, or you mean that the door must be facing up and down, not lying on a flat plain? Also, how big must this door be? 2x1?

Horizontal, as in perpendicular to the ground. The motion of the door must move perpendicular to the ground to open and close. The minecart must pass up, or down.
The door can be any size. But 3x3 or 4x4 is preferable.

I'm not trolling? Click it, its "Minecraft Door.zip" (only way you can upload MC worlds is .zip or .rar). Download it, view inside it, you'll see a "Minecraft Door" world. Here are pictures to prove it:
He doesn't mean elevator, he means a trapdoor. Jesus Christ people. PERPENDICULAR.
If he said a perpendicular trap door, or elevator, I would've understood. But he said "Door", which is exactly what I made. He said it must work both ways, can't have it drop through both times;) Therefor, going through one way, its a trap door (easy), but going through the other way, the cart must be lifted up (elevator) (hard).
Yes, a method so simple, I couldn't even begin to grasp it.. No.
Lets start step by step, shall we:
Step 1:
Have a Horiztonal PISTON door (at least a 3x3 or bigger.) Horizontal being that all the pistons operate parallel to the ground. As in === instead of || .
Step 2:
Have a minecart be able to traverse that gap both ways, without the rail system breaking (other then modifying rails through pistons.) The minecart must ASCEND and DESCEND.
Here is a picture I drew, just 4 u

Perpendicular means "at 90 degrees" and is the opposite to parallel, therefore vertical IS perpendicular to the horizontal, so I'm not sure why you've labelled your diagram "vertical, not perpendicular to the ground".
A small mistake. You seem to grasp what I'm trying to say. It ment to say "minecarts need to travel perpendicular to the ground."

Does the door have to be flush against the ground or can it be down a couple of blocks?
Doesn't matter, I just need it to open and close fully. As well as have a minecart ascend and descend through it. The level of the ground is irrelevant.

I was using a triple extender and got it to go downward fine. But the only way to get it to go up would be on a track, and tracks get destroyed if they move
