As you've all probably seen in the next snapshot we will be getting tripwires. I honestly have no idea what possessed them to put this in. Is it just a more compact line of pressure plates with redstone underneath?
Random: It's useful for hidden traps!
Not really, it still has a texture and it isn't a "trip-laser" so people can still see it and easily avoid it. Perhaps another novelty added to redstone.
Opinions?
Edit: Alright my opinion has changed. Slightly. THe texture is indeed very faint now we can go hands on with them, they are a form of instant wire-ish and they can be placed in mid air. The selling factor of introducing it in the first place.
I can be used as a trap for mobs, they cant tell the difference. Also I think it will be easier creating tripwire then it will be creating 19 pressure plates. It is a lot harder to see then plates as well.
I don't think tripwires are in the 'Minecraft spirit' and seem more like something you would find in a mod and I'm sure there much more useful things Mojang could be spending their time on such as fixing the huge list of bugs, especially slimes, they drive me mad.
That being said, Tripwires could be pretty fun to just play around with or whatever and fixing bugs can get very boring so i'm not really sure. It might even just be a joke but I guess we will have to wait and see
Ya know, there aren't any sandstone pressure plates or other varieties aside from stone and wood so it wouldn't look like a sore thumb with other blocks so people could use them for adventure maps, and if you're smart enough you can set up a trick, you know a diversion. >:3
Why do we need tripwires? Why don't ask: Why do we need new Sand Stones with symbols or pyramids structures?
Tripwires are just a consequence/continuity for the new "Indiana Jones" content of Minecraft, just this =P
And with luck, they will create a lot of new contents to make the pyramids less boring.
This was the purpose of the new Sand stones, better than believe that was just a random Idea since the start.
Perhaps, but I've never known jeb/notch to add a feature for one sole reason. It seems gimmicky in a way. To add items that where we have blocks that already have these properties.
it may look silly at first, but lets look at an example.
your in a temple, and thers a tripwire. there are multiple things it can do. it could triger TNT, a door to open,
lava to fall in your way, the floor to fall, etc.
i think that you must make a decistion before you do anything, what to make, build, destory...
so, this should add anoth aspect of that nature, a choise, good or ban. you just have to find out.

I agree that pressure plates are great, also there is some cool mods that make it better, but who knows what are they planning to tripwire at the moment since it have a different mechanic? Maybe a giant cube that will squareroll behind the player, haha. I just don't have nothing against this new adventurer content, in my opinion it seems very legit in Minecraft, that way maybe zombies gain a new mummy skin. The ssp~smp merge thing doesn't seems that cool though.
Bah, you're all asking "why?", when you should be asking "why not?".
Gimmicky and visible? Perhaps so, especially if a player textures them to be blatantly obvious. But that's it? It's just "gimmicky"? That not even a reason! Whatever is put in minecraft is automatically minecraft-y, even if it's new or different.
Jeb is in a position to affect a lot of people with the changes he adds, and has the opportunity to do things in order to see how players react. I'm willing to bet that he added them if *only* to see what sort of things players would builld with them.
I don't know what sort of things will be built yet, but I'm certain that these will make a lot of cool new things possible.
I believe all you who are complaining should please step aside so the adults can discuss this in a proper manner.
I reckon tripwires could be good, especially since its in a snapshot, it has the potential to be re-textured, and as we should all know, we wont be seeing 1.3 until at least June/July. If it doesn't get re-textured, it could be useful as a tool to hunt animals and aggressive mobs. Also if you complain about it not being Minecraft-y if that is even a phrase, please go back under your rock.... Minecraft is ALL about creation, Minecraft is shaping up to be similar to how man evolved, it might end up being a metropolis, just a forest, or full of traps, it is up to the player to decide, exactly like how cavemen started harvesting wheat and making bread, it is the same concept. If you do not understand because you are a 6 year old and don't deserve to be on these forums, please look up "human evolution".
Thanks for reading my comment and there may be more in the future.
First off, that's an incredibly arrogant way to enter a conversation, secondly, whilst I agree the tripwire may have interesting uses and could be useful for redstone, I agree that it does not fit in Minecraft as other things do, I would definitely agree with SpasticLime in that it looks like something out of a mod, it does not fit with the 'blocky' feel Minecraft has as it takes up too smaller an area, and appears to be almost curved, something that definitely does not belong in the game.
As I said before, if you read carefully. I said that it might be re-textured before 1.3... which could make it more blocky. It might also be able to be hidden and maybe even go further by making it have a smaller hitbox (or whatever it is lol) so there could be multiple wires per block.
As for the arrogance, I apologise deeply, I am extremely tired after working in a bakery for Tertiary training making Pavlovas all day which annoyed me a bit.
well i have been seeing mostly smp uses but maybe its more of a single player use like u can be mining and have a few traps killings mobs for u in places where mobs spawn so mybw its to add a more survival feel to the hunting aspect of minecraft
There's a chance that the trip wire has an unlimited range. With pressure plates you'd have to stick redstone beneath the block or connecting to the block the pressure plate is on and the redstone would have a 15 block range. With tripwires, this may not be the case, and if the trip wires can be as long as you want, they might be useful for sending long distance redstone signals instantaneously, rather than with a delay like with repeaters.
One thing that people saying the tripwire is just a pressure plate seem to forget is that it has one big advantage relative to pressure plates for traps: destroying it will trigger it. The closest you can get to that with pressure plates that I know of is an item-pickup detector, and that only lasts 5 minutes or requires a dispenser and some wiring.
How I see it is the tripwire is VERY Minecraft-y, but many of the updates before have made Minecraft lose it's feel in a way, that feel we lost once 1.8 hit. But the feeling lost is what I see as Minecraft-y, not some tripwire which could be ingenious for all kinds of things. But with change comes more change and I've grown used to the new Minecraft so all of it's features are good.

I can think of many things that can be done with this:
If it act exactly like pressure plate when in contact with water, it could be used to make the actual most efficient mobs traps even more efficient, as it is a way to carry power to the sides that is more efficien than pressure plates.
Even if it is washed away by water, it still is a less obvious way than pressure plate to trigger things, and also very usefull when space is a problem (tripwire mechanism is 2 blocks high, pressure plate over redstone is 4)
Why not? Tripwires could add a whole other concept to PressurePlates. You used to be able to jump over them, but this could be a way to make traps unavoidable, becasue you have to getsomewhere. It might be good for races or other stuff too, idk.

Nows the time to gracefully tell Mojang, No thanks .

Jnrdingo out.
I'm somewhat curious if they can be triggered by objects as well or just players/mobs.
should be useful either way though.
