Since this thread is up again, I might as well confirm that the floating sand cannot be next to floating sand from another chunk. The first set of floating sand will collapse, leaving the next sand chunk floating.

What do you mean? A continuous line of floating sand placed on the signs, that extends over a chunk boundary?
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?

Does having a gap in the sand at the chunk boundary allow it to keep floating?
What's puzzling though, is that there shouldn't be a block update from the floating sand at all. Maybe it's something else?
