It would appear that the items stay on the blocks because they can be placed on them. Try this again, but instead of using mossy cobble, use glass after the first 3 or 4 blocks. They will likely pop off when the glass reaches them.
provided the placement is still correct(ie. Wheat on farmland, redstone switches on solid blocks, etc.) it'll remain unless it receives a block update at the same time.
Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable.
