Check out my new version of a 3x3 retracting vault door thingy. It's nice and flush with the wall now. It's also really fast and takes up very little space. It could probably be a bit smaller but I'm happy with it the way it is.
Let me know if you have any questions about how to make it! or whatever. also constructive criticism is cool
But it is possible to make it resetable. Here is someone that actually made a 4 x 4 hidden piston door with no visibly redstone.
Just trying to show you what the possibilities are.
That door doesn't pull into the wall first, which is the whole point. It looks cool and is more "cinematic", which is nice for a vault door or a hidden door. People make 5x5 doors that reset too, but anything higher than 3x3 and i'm fairly certain it's impossible to have in pull in first.
Ah ok I understand now.. that also is possible. Though the person that made it admitted it didn't work 100% of the time. He used powered detector rails. Would push the blocks and rails with carts on them out from behind the door to power the pistons once they were in position.
I made a 2highx4wide Jeb Door that exploited some odd quirks of piston doors being overly sensitive to redstone. I could cheat and make it 3 high and just pull the bottom row of blocks straight down, but the hallway behind the door would still only be 2high.

The door was still completely hidden since it was flush against the outside wall and had no wire or pistons showing.
sweet, yeah it's the center block that causes all the problems.
You could use a block swapper on that 2nd design for the top piston to conceal it when it's closed.
*edit*Err no you couldn't.
That does remind me of something I've been wanting to do though.
Jeb's Door with glass blocks for a door. And a 1tick pulse so the sticky pistons will act like regular pistons so you can pull the pistons back away from the door and look through the door. Guess you could call it a Jeb's Sliding Glass door.

also just for fun here is the terrible old one.

this does that... you can't reset a door that retracts before opening. there is no way to move redstone wire.
Which wire?
yes it's essentially a 3x3 jeb door. except jeb didn't invent those >_< i made a version of these before pistons were in the game

thats a pulse inhibitor. it doesnt work without it. otherwise it would need a button.

No visible dust or torches. Probably enough space to hide the pistons also with a shift or block swap before/after open close.
I have seen other 3x3 concealable open/close patterns as well.
Here is one i did with a torch in the hallway:
Nice. Yeah thats similar to this, and it autoresets which is really nice but it doesn't all pull in at the same time.
I like the second one alot! thats a really nice opening mechanic. its looks sweet.
