Like, say, theres a challenge that you have to do, and there's lava in front of you, and you press the button and blocks go up, allowing you to pass, but after 5 seconds or so they go back down, so if you were still on the blocks, you get lava'd.
If what you want is to have the piston go out as soon as you push the button but wait a while for it to go down then you should add one or more repeaters connected to the button that also goes to the piston.

I know that you can probably make that design more compact but at least it works.
You can extend the row with repeaters for a longer time before it retracts.
How do I make it so that, with the push of a button, the pistons will go up, and after a few seconds they go back down?
