So I'm fairly new to the game and last week I started to build an elevated railway from my base to a village. It's just a railway with a straight line from point A to point B for now. Now I want to expand the system but for that I need (or actually, I would just like it) a switch to change directions at almost the end of that line. I've looked up the wiki page on logic gates and I understand how to build them and the effects of them, but I'm unsure how to implement them in my case, preferably without seeing the redstone (components) if possible. Of course I would want this for multiple locations in the future as well since I want to keep expanding it. So I'm quite the beginner to this concept of the game.
The idea taken from a few existing tutorials is that the detector rails would power down the powered rails when a minecart passes it. In one of the tutorials I've seen a circuit using repeaters to power the rails again making it timed but that's not exactly what I'm looking for. I want to be able to to power the rails on again manually after I've changed the direction if necessary. From the info I've read from several wiki-pages, I've gathered the easiest (only?) way would be to have 2 separate circuits then, one for the potential directional change and another for the powered rails on all 3 sides.
For the rail-switch, I figured out that coming from the north side (my homebase) and the south side (village #1) buttons might be the best way to solve it (screenshot #1) but I've noticed the buttons only give a short pulse, meaning not enough time to power up the rails and move past this area.Of course I also want to be able to change it from the third side (village #2), which is to the west, as well. I've read something about a pulse extender but I'm not sure that would fit into my case, I wouldn't even know how to do it then in that case. Also I've noticed that the redstone circuit in screenshot #2 doesn't work in that it doesn't change the direction of the rails. Ideally I want the 3 buttons connected to the one directional changing rails work as light switches for the same light bulb.
Here is a system using a latch (RS FlipFlop) that turns off the rail when the detector plate is crossed, and turns it back on when button is pressed. You can rearrange the wiring as you need it.
Note however, that you will not start travelling when rail turns on as either relative motion or a block behind you is needed to start you. Another option is to have the powered rail on downward slant.
I tried to play around with this for a bit in a test area and it works when I keep everything on surface-level. However when I try to create this redstone-system underground, everything works except the powered rail.
Am I right in assuming redstone can't activate a powered rail one block down the same way it works in reverse with a detector rail? In that case, would there be any way to solve this without laying down any redstone on the surface (I still prefer to hide everything underground)? Or am I just doing this wrong?
The redstone dust will not activate the block above it. You can use a torch but must insert an inverted signal to get it turning on correctly. Try replacing the front part of your circuit with this making sure the torch on top is under the rail. Crude but should be effective.
Yeah, I've been playing with it for several hours but I finally got it working with the one latch you mentioned. I also got it working for the 2 other sides as well and combined them into 1 single system.
A lot bigger than I anticipated but I'm in the process of hiding them into some kind of building (at least in appearance from the outside) I'll make.
