trying to make a hidden pool on survival mode for my son activated by a switch. The build is (bottom to top in game)
Redstone or repeaters, observers, sticky piston and then stone or quartz.
The switch and mechanisms work but the pistons won’t stay up when activated, they just shoot up and then down immediately.
Is is there anything I’m missing or not doing right?
Many thanks
Pistons only stay extended while powered.
From your description each of the pistons is extending when powered by the pulse from the observer beneath, and contracting at the end of that pulse… [This is the intended behavior.]
EDIT lost part of the above when fixing the formatting:
Should say: This was the intended behavior, but a bug old enough to now be considered standard should make pistons drop blocks when powered by a 1-tick pulse
How large is the pool? [For 3x3 or 5x5 this post shows ways to make this work.]
For the general case, there are ways to make a continuous floor of pistons eg. Minecraft How To - Floor Of Pistons Tutorial
Note that if the floor is large, there will be a perceptible delay as the signal propagates…

Thanks for the reply. I think I see what you’re saying. To make things easier here’s a link to the video I was copying it from
Honestly I don’t know why I didn’t post it in the first place lol it’s a 7x8 wide hole which is 5 blocks deep.

Yes, that helps… [It also pointed up an error I made in editing my previous post. :sigh: ]
The design in the video is based on the sticky pistons 'dropping blocks' when rapidly powered and depowered.
"Sticky pistons only stick to a block when retracting, so a block next to
the piston head can be pushed aside by another piston and sticky
pistons cannot hold falling blocks horizontally against gravity. They
also don't pull blocks after starting to push them. This can be
done by giving the piston a short pulse, specifically shorter than 3
gameticks, or 1.5 redstone ticks (0.15 seconds, barring lag)"
The idea is the one-tick pulses from the observers cause the sticky pistons to either 'spit-out' or 'pick-up' the blocks above, with the water sources around the edges reforming the pool.
The behavior you're seeing is not normal for Java edition . [There have been a few older snapshot editions of java in which the block dripping mechanic was borken.], but is normal for Bedrock (which may also be called the BetterTogetherUpdate version or the Win10 version).
(The two versions are similar, but this is one of the critical differences.)
In what version (Java/Bedrock) are you playing?
[The initial screen for java now says "minecraft java edition" whereas the initial bedrock screen just says "minecraft" (Confusingly, older java editions also say just "minecraft".)]
Also, what is the number of the version (ie 1.13.2 is the most recent release version of java edition)?
From the comments (qqv. Azmi Putra 9 hours ago & Juliana Rosales 1 week ago) this design will not work in bedrock.

Ok thank you I’ll take a look at the link. We play it together so the main map is on my Xbox one and my son is on the pocket edition on the iPad. So the pool is in the saved Xbox one game

What are you using to power it? Lever, redstone torch, button, etc?

A lever

Can you try taking some pictures or a video of the contraption and you toggling it on and off?
