Hey, looking for some help, and trying to firba furnace in a specific spot, here's my requirements if anyone can help me out.
I got a basement setup on a medium sized house, and have a wall that's like 6wide x 5 tall. I want to have the 3 chests (fuel, items to cook/smelt, and finished product all on the ground level, then 4 furnaces actually visible above it (I like the glow of the furnaces churning out my products lol). I prefer to not go the minecart route, and dont want to have to operate with a switch. have room to dig into the wall, and I can go down from there. This is survival mode.
IF I can't get all of those things, I would give up seeing the furnaces, and can hide them, but I prefer not using minecart, and my chests being on ground level.
Now consider how these requirements will interact with a simpler system using one furnace:
The product will need to be removed by a hopper under the furnace which can be made to push items forward or down into a chest.
In the former case the furnace will be one above and one behind the chest; in the latter two directly above the chest.
The fuel will need to be added by a hopper to on side (or behind) the furnace.
For a fuel chest at floor level (the same as the output chest) you will first need a hopper beneath it, then a minimum of 2 droppers ( the 1st to raise the fuel back to the height of the chest, the 2nd to push fuel up into the hopper that feeds the furnace)... and the clock to run the droppervator.
The raw material will need to be added by a hopper atop the furnace.
For a input chest at floor level (the same as the output chest) you will first need a hopper beneath it, then a minimum of 3 droppers ( the 1st to raise the fuel back to the height of the chest, the 2nd and 3rd to push fuel up into the hopper that feeds the input hopper that feeds the furnace)... and the clock to run the droppervator. [Since there is no way of directly measuring what is in a furnace (comparators ouput is based on the combination of all three furnace slots) the siganl from the fuel clock can be used.]
Note that – even with a simpler one furnace design – placing the fuel and raw material input chests below the furnace will cause you to pay a considerable price in complexity and resources (as well as having a clock that is constantly running and potentially constant noise from droppers).
[This is probably why you haven't found a design like this.]
Expanding to multiple furnaces:
One significant advantage of the mincart based systems is that they distribute load across the furnace array.
The hopper based systems I'm familiar with will either tend to use some furnaces more than others (decreasing the overall time efficiency) OR require seperate fuel and input lines for each furnace and manual load balancing….

As an alternative:
Assuming seperate fuel and raw material inputs for each furnace are acceptable, would you consider having the fuel and raw material chests concealed, but located to the side and atop the four furnaces?

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.
Your walk through there was pretty informative. I'm still super new to redstone, starting to learn how to manipulate slightly existing builds, but not up to creating my own yet.
The thing I want to challenge myself to do, is incorporate the different useful redstone devices in an aesthetic way that would be functional in a real life kind of way. With the auto-furnace, that is keeping the chests ground level since in real life, you wouldn't load a chest above your head, and the furnaces would be visible. The minecart issue I have is that the setups I've seen, you load the materials into the minecart chest, therefore it's visible which I don't like.
All of that being said... I build in survival, and Im not resource rich, so I gotta build things that are reasonable on resources, iron mainly.
Honestly ScotsMisers post was too long to read for me but I think his main point was that the chests HAVE to be above the furnaces, not below, in order to make use of hoppers. I also agree with ScotsMiser that using minecarts isn't all that bad, its usually just as fast as hoppers and if you can't stand the noise they make you can turn off their sounds in the settings.
If you're not to fussed about having the glow of the furnaces, & IF you can dig underground - LogdotZip came up with a flush floor auto furnace design, but it only has a single furnace, yet no minecarts
He claims it's a 2(deep) x 4(length) x 4(height/depth) in size
If you REALLY want to see the furnace lit up, then I guess you could have it facing forward & place 2 Glass blocks in front of it, so while you're standing at floor level - you can look down through the glass blocks & see the flames of the furnace
EDIT: had a play & came up with a variation of NetDotZip's design that has a double furnaces but still only have the 3 chests (although these are now double chests)
It's basically 2 of these mirrored & placed back to back
Hopefully the attached pictures show how I built it layer-by-layer
(Ignore the purpur block border - that's just something I do on my test world to show the edges of the build easily)
