I have a large underground room. Around the room are a series of redstone lamps. On one wall is a switch that is meant to turn them all on/off. I have a line of redstone dust (and repeaters, when necessary) around the outside perimeter of the room. However, it seems you can't turn lamps on just by having powered dust running next to them.
I need to know what I have to do differently to make this work.
The available space to use is one block wide, by 2 blocks tall, by many blocks long (the perimeter of the room outside the walls). What I really need is a block that says "when I have power next to any of my 8 sides, emit power in all 8 directions." I don't think such a block exists, but I'm not sure. There has to be some way of doing this without making the dust corridor 2 blocks wide (so I can aim the dust directly at the lamps). That is a huge waste of space I can't afford in my building design.
If there is literally do way to do this within the constraints of the space, is it possible to mod redstone lamps so that they will turn on if there is powered redstone dust next to them (regardless of the direction of the dust)?
As the above pic shows, the simplest way is to power a solid block adjacent to each lamp, as in the middle example; the block can also be powered this way by running a repeater into it and having redstone the other side (strong powering the block) or redstone coming in and a repeater on the other side (weak powering the block), both or which don't need you to have redstone on top of the block.
This means you wont be able to negotiate the passage for any reason unless you make the passage 3 blocks high (I always like to be able to access my redstone circuits) but its your call on that score
So while that worked fine, I have discovered other aspects of my ambitious lighting plans have not. My intent was to set up a system where a building has redstone lamps that can be switched on an off individually in their separate rooms, but then in the basement there is a sort of "master switch" that cuts power to the whole building, including some other lights that don't have individual on/off switches.
I went about doing this by having a simple lever in the basement that sends power through long trails of redstone dust & repeaters, then vertically through each floor in several columns of alternating block/redstone-torch. This part worked fine. I was able to confirm that the switch in the basement could cut the power effectively through the whole building.
However, the individual switches are a problem. My plan here was that the switch for a light would use a sticky piston to push a block that had redstone dust on it leading to a lamp, and that this would cut the connection and turn off the lamp. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that pushing the block will cause the redstone dust on it to pop off and turn into an item. It does the same thing if I try using a repeater instead. Of course this prevents the light from coming back on when the piston pulls the block back.
So what I want to know... suppose you have a line of redstone dust that is powered from some source. Is there any way to cause the power to be interrupted at a specific point in the line, without turning off the actual source of the power, and in a way that when you flick the lever back, it reconnects the power?

I think I'm actually going to change to using command blocks (just have to switch back and forth between survival and creative to get those), since that way I can store complicated redstone stuff below the basement and have command blocks work remotely... means a lot less space in the rooms given up for redstone circuits.
