I was working on this just yesterday. Use a button, trip wire, or pressure plate to activate it but not a lever. also im sure there is a much better way to do it but i don't really care because this way works.

Your method is completely correct. Although, as you thought there is a more efficient way. The below pictures show a way to do it will just 1 repeater and about 4 redstone. Exact same principal tho, just a vertical half of a jeb door.

The only problem with this design is that it requires a lever. My version closes behind you because i used a button.

Not exactly a problem, as one could quite easily break the lever and replace it with a button. I just chose a button for the screenshots so I could show it open and closed.
EDIT: I have just noticed however that you have made it twice as wide. Which is something the design I posted does not do.

But if you use a button then u will have to inverse the redstone, otherwise it will be reversed.
im trying to make a hidden home and want to make the entrance a hole and fall it only needs to be one way
