Hello, i play factions and on the server they banned restone torches. Because of this i cant build a auto sorter. I then saw this video in a base of one that uses pistons and no torches so i know its possible. Can anyone help me find a design that doesn't use red stone torches?
The "distribution" hoppers are facing sideways to create a hopper pipe for items to move through to be sorted.
The "filter" hopper has the item to be sorted in the leftmost slot and 21 filler items filling the other slots. The filler items should be junk that will never be sorted or named items. It's also important that the filter hoppers not be facing down.
The "valve" hopper is usually disabled by the power from the block of redstone. When a filter item increases the signal from the filter hopper's comparator, the piston pushes down, enabling the valve hopper to pull an item from the filter hopper.
This is a basic design that doesn't include overflow protection. Also, one item will get stuck in the valve hopper.
the server is laggy so it doesn't work as good. im sorting iron and poppy's and when the iron filters in it sometimes takes all the iron out instead of leaving 1.
Try increasing the number of filter items in the first slot and reducing the number of filler items in the last slot by the same amount. That will give you a buffer that can handle some lag without losing all your filter items -- if a few extra get sucked down, it'll just fill back up when more items come in.
EDIT: Here's a different kind of item sorter that could be built without torches, I think:
… and a fix for future versions:
He uses some torches for the clocks, but there are a lot of clocks that don't need torches.
Not a good idea. I check the redstone forum every day and PMs won't reach me any faster. Better to continue this thread if it's on-topic, or start a new thread for something new -- that way others might benefit from the answers, and if I'm not here someone else might answer your questions.
EDIT: If you have an iron farm, you might want to use cauldrons/capacitors instead of blocks of redstone. Also, you'll probably need that overflow system I mentioned earlier. Just make sure the items can't back up into the filter hoppers somehow.
I have the same problem... What do u mean by add more filler items??
more fiLTer items, fewer fiLLer items == more diamonds (or whatever), fewer sticks (or whatever)
There should still be a total of 22 items in the filter hopper, but with more diamonds (or whatever) the hopper can afford to lose* a few to server lag and just get more later
* by "lose", I mean they get drained into your chest for you to use, so they're not lost, just not available anymore for filtering
i am trying to do something similar except i want to make the valve hopper open always so what i mean is somehow removing the redstone torches of the normal design, but still keeping the effect that the torch has on the filter hopper
so that when items go through they are sorted but are also faster and will always go to the chest unless the filter has less than 41 items

Here's a simple torchless item sorter:
The pistons are sticky.

OMG YOUR THE BEST
wait that didnt work any other ideas?
that didnt work
Duplication
Sorry, the comparator was powering the dust under the block. Try replacing the bottom dust with repeaters:
any other design that works? this one is okay but its not the best
What do you want improved? Size, resources, speed, etc.?

Holy crap that fixed the problem thank you so much
if i need anything else can i pm u?

Maybe because of redstone timers that cause constant lag? That's the only reason I can think of.
i have nothing to say, sorry
