ok, so I finally tried to use command blocks in 1.8, normally I don't dabble in redstone, but I tried to use /setblock to place place a stone brick.
Only problem is that stone bricks have multiple types under the same name. and at this point I have tried everything
/setblock X Y Z minecraft:stonebrick 1, /setblock X Y Z minecraft:stonebrick 1 replace.
nothing is working! and at this point it is frustrating me more than what should be necessary, and to top it all off, there is nothing about this issue on google!
So I ask you, good people of the minecraft forums. HELP!

Many items have multiple different types. To find out what number to use turn on extended tool tips by pressing F3 and H at the same time. Hover your mouse over the item you're looking to use. It should have a number at the end of the top row. That's its "damage value" Use that number in place of the 1 you have in your command.
It's the stone bricks, it's part of this thing where a block is replaced by sand, causing you to fall and land on a pressure plate, at which point the space where the sand replaced the stone brick will be filled in with another.
essentially, the sand replaces the original stone brick, but when I need to put a stone brick back in place to seal off the entrance hole, it doesn't work.
I appreciate the advice, but I pressed h and f3 at the same time, nothing changed from the normal f3 menu, I even checked, I opened it once with that method, and then normally.
I didn't see a difference, and "top row" isn't very descriptive, there are a ton of numbers and I don't see what one is what.
Ok, I hate to bump this, but the truth is I'm doing this for an adventure map, and it's frustrating moments like this that usually spell the end for my inspiration, and considering that I've sunk so many hours of work on this already.
Well let's just say that giving up on this would suck, to say the least. So please, I beg of someone, anyone, help me!

Hello. The F3 menu wont change. The tool tips when hovering your mouse over items in inventory will change. It works on my Minecraft. Should work on yours too. So here's the numbers for stone bricks.

I would lose the minecraft:, and just have setback XYZ stone brick 0 replace. Also, a tip, you can make the sand look like stone bricks if instead of doing setblock sand, you did setback X Y Z air, and then did
/summon FallingSand X Y Z {Time:1,Block:stonebrick}
Also, what specific error message do you get with yours?

The only reason you would get that the block could not be placed is if that was already the block there. Are you sure your coordinates weren't at a place there was already stone bricks? Either way, replacing with air first would work.

Yeah, I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but as you see from above, this issue has been resolved already, I appreciate your help, but at this point if an admin could lock this now that would be great <:3
