I was simply fooling around with comparators, and then, well, this:
the daylight detector has a power of 11 and the inverted one has a power of 4. As you can see, the comparator is in subtract mode but seems to be acting as if is in compare mode with the output being 11. Probably another derp of mine, but I thank you for your help.

I don't believe comparators can pull signals from blocks that are placed next to them (even when in subtract mode). If you place a piece of redstone between the inverted sensor and the comparator it should work.
