In my adventures with command blocks (I started 1 day ago), I have been heavily influenced by the likes of SethBling, and I often see him using WitherSkulls as an invisible entity. On a project I am working on, an invisible, floating entity would be very useful, but when I attempt to summon a WitherSkull, it seems to completely vanish. Not just visually, I understand that it's supposed to do that, but when I attempt to /kill @e[type=WitherSkull], nothing happens. I have compared this to /killing any other mob, and it always returns an ouput in the chat. The command I'm using to summon the WitherSkull is this, if it makes any difference.
/execute @p ~ ~ ~ /summon WitherSkull ~ ~ ~
Summary: I try to summon a WitherSkull at my location, but it disappears both visually and from the world.

As I have recently been starting my witherskull trials, I have failed also. Reading wikis made me to believe that no matter what, you need to set a direction to the skull. Here's an example command for a still one:
If that's true, it makes a little sense, however, did you try /killing the WitherSkulls, and did it give an ouput? It should say "Killed 1 Wither Skull", I think.
