Oh boy! Three new types of stone?! I can't WAIT to experience the thrill of utilizing the exact same block THREE MORE TIMES! Iron trapdoors, you say? As if wooden trapdoors weren't obvious enough. Hello, it's called TRAPDOOR, not OBVIOUS HATCH TO SECRET BASEMENT. More interaction with villagers? You mean the annoying squidward noises they now make? Even BETTER!
You have a volume control for a reason. If you don't like the noises villagers make, turn off mob noise or don't whine.
The first snapshot of Minecraft 1.8 has arrived! This update will be split into two primary focuses: Survival gameplay & improvements, and new fancy abilities for adventure maps!
This has been an update of un-fulfilled promises for mainstream survival. There's no real other way to glaze over this.
How many promises has there been? How specific are they? It said it was split into survival and the other thing. It didn't say it was split perfectly down the middle, or that all of the survival stuff would be put in immediately in the first half of snapshots, or that the survival gameplay would have new mechanics involved, or that the survival improvements would be to your liking.
There's been no unfulfilled promises so far as I know. Please bring proof if you're going to say something like that.
Hey OP, perhaps you should hold off complaining until the update is even close to being finished. Why? I dunno maybe because DinnerBone confirmed survival additions for this update 10 days ago right on his Twitter!

After I'm finished with the Great Inventory Rewrite of 2014, I'm going to take a look at some "adventury" survival features we have planned.

There you have it, so for god's sake give it a rest already. You kids are just never satisfied. I often browse but rarely post on this forum because the things I'd like to say to some of you people would probably violate the forum guidelines. It's positively infuriating reading this garbage. Be thankful. Be happy that you get to enjoy the worldwide phenomenon that is Minecraft. Because there truly is no game like it and having been a player since Minecraft Classic, I can tell you that it's thanks to the hard work of the devs that this game has become landslides better. And they will continue to make it better. Not many games update after official release, especially not years after. Show some appreciation, for once! I'd be delighted! I'm sure the devs would too.

Being completely honest, I agree with you. The game was first designed for surviving, building, mining, co-operation with players, etc, etc and etc. But after creative was added in, it was going uphill. People were able to make BETTER co-operation and buildings with the new gamemode. Then, commandblocks, adventure mode, superflat, many other mapmaking features were added.
I know that they are doing a great job, and they are. But the thing is, they need to change focus on what to improve. Creative, mapmaking features, more commandblocks and commands available? That is amazeballs. But one thing is, they also need to focus on Survival too. They have been focusing on mapmaking features recently, game has been less dynamic.
For example, as you stated, when you get your pair of diamond armor and tools, there is no need to go to the End, Nether, or search for a mineshaft, villages, dungeons or pyramids. Why? Because you do not need it. After killing the Wither, cool, you get this item to get a boost relic for speed, health regeneration etc. But why do you need THAT? other then accomplishment, you just do not need it. Monsters are weak against your armor and tools anyways, you are getting stronger and stronger as you kill mobs, getting closer to godly enchantments.
I wish Mojang would change the focus not only towards survival, but more towards the whole game. They are doing a great job overall and have been adding some good fixes and additions to survival, but we need more essential stuff. More challenges. Sure, the slime block is fun and stuff, but it is not 'ESSENTIAL' to survival. Well, it's your personal opinions, but I agree that Survival needs a LOT of improvements atm.. I don't really play this game anymore, but I would want to. And by that, I want to return to playing survival.
I wrote something like this once, and I got replied that most of the people bought minecraft expecting updates...
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who buys something because I like it how it is, and not because "it has potential, I buy it and then nag the devs because it's not how I want it".
/rant
Precisely. Now, when I bought the game I did expect updates, considering it was in it's unfinished state. However upon release I was very happy to hear that the updates would continue. I would have been satisfied if they had not. My only problem would have been enchanting, because that was totally broken until it was changed in 1.3(?).
Honestly, the reason I rarely post on these forums is that I have a nasty habit of being convinced that there's a chance in nether that I might just get through to people. But honestly a lot of the people playing Minecraft these days appear to be children, whom are often convinced that they know everything and that they are entitled to anything. I could write a full detailed thesis on the matter and nothing would change. My only hope is that those like myself are making ourselves heard to the devs, so that they get the appreciation and understanding they deserve. I'd hate for them to cease updates due to "Jebs Law."

That's exactly why I made Enderbent which is basic survival with content. I had to use spawners but they could make difficulty leveled spawn areas randomly with simple alterations to the existing code. The problem is putting together chance of spawn, type of mob, level dependent random equipment generator, area creation and disable conditions, anti exploit features, and make it all balanced would take much time.
Some here seem to understand the model is that updates keep people interested who tell others that make new purchases. It's not bad, it's just smart business. Many people are drawn in solely due to ongoing updates.
The new model intends to pass the cost of future updates to mod creators.
We haven't gotten major changes to the survival aspect of Minecraft since when? Beta 1.8? Nine updates ago.
First of all, that is just straight up NOT TRUE. I started playing in Beta 1.8.1 and an incredible amount has changed for survival since then. Here is a very brief list:
New mechanics: Animal breeding, Enchanting, Brewing and potions, Item repairing, Villager trading, Beacon, Horse riding, Biome grouping
New mobs: Ender Dragon, Wither, Mooshroom, Villagers, Snow Golem, Magma Cube, Blaze, Iron Golem, Ocelot, Witch, Bats, Horses
New biomes: Mushroom island, Tundra, Jungle, Mesa, Savanna, Roofed Forest, Mega Taiga, Ice Plains
Tons of new blocks like quartz, emeralds, etc
Also, how can you judge the Minecraft 1.8 update when it isn't even out yet? It is currently the end of February and 1.8 probably won't be out until the end of March or maybe April! They have plenty of time to add new stuff.
One time this kind of update had to come... I really dont get why people keep complaining -.-
for mapmakers, this update is one of the best updates so far
Thing is, not everyone's a mapmaker. People are complaining because they think that Mojang's forgotten about the majority of their customers.
Ok, let's pause for a second. I know what you're thinking, you're about to scroll down to the comments section and criticize me. Yes, I am not happy with 1.8, but not for the reason you think.
Minecraft 1.8 is full of nice features, and besides the horrible changes to mob farms, I like pretty much everything about this update. But there is one thing bugging me. There are no actual changes to survival.
Sure, Mojang added a lot of things that can be utilized in survival MODE, but nothing added actually changes the entire purpose of survival mode, staying alive. And it's not like survival doesn't even need a lot of changes anymore. After you get a full set of iron armor (skipping leather, of course), you have no reason to worry about dying. Wooden tools are absolutely useless with the exception of pickaxes. And in just a few hours work, you find yourself invincible. This is not a good thing, since the name of the gamemode is quite clearly named "survival."
We haven't gotten major changes to the survival aspect of Minecraft since when? Beta 1.8? Nine updates ago. It's not like it's been over a year since they overhauled survival. This is not good, while the foremost purpose of Minecraft is to create anything in your imagination, survival takes a close second. It adds difficulty and excitement into the game, and without it you have a very dull, yet versatile game.
So, what can Mojang do? For one, they could work on balance. Wooden tools are useless, and gold tools are even worse. They can also prolong the excitement that occurs when you know that you could very well die soon if you mess up. [/rant]
I agree, although I also think the only good things that comes from 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8 are Leads, the ability to change your name, name tags and better fishing, but I could live without ALL of those things if you want a challenge try some mods that add that!
This update has added so many things for mapmakers and quite frankly it's about time.
We just had a massive survival world change, every biome was tweaks as well as block additions, now mapmakers have exponentially more tools to play around with to make exciting adventure maps.
Not everything has to be about you.
I have a few things to say here, firstly I'm assuming you meant to say every biome HAS tweaks, secondly not everyone is a mapmaker so alot of people aren't affected by this and lastly the only thing affecting biomes in 1.8 is the new blocks which not EVERYONE is excited about just considering they are COMPLETELY USELESS!!! I personally think 1.8 would be better put to use as a ocean biome update for the ocean is quite lacking in all aspects.
The point is, it's (almost) impossible to keep the survival mode challenging for player that know how it works.
If you know a game (whatever it is), the game gets easy.
New mobs and/or structures will get "boring" after a few weeks anyway, once you know how they work.
"The point is, it's (almost) impossible to keep the survival mode challenging for player that know how it works. If you know a game (whatever it is), the game gets easy. Not quite true, once you know there how there is a zombie apocalypse is it easy? No. They could add lowlands where it floods or tsunamis, sometimes chances of zombies to spawn in "Hordes" of anywhere from 10-100 to mix it up a little....
"New mobs and/or structures will get "boring" after a few weeks anyway, once you know how they work." Again, not exactly ravines can be fun to jump around, kill mobs and mine in, enderdragons and withers are alright chew toys and aren't zombiepigmen great fun?
The more for less thing, yeah sure... whatever, but where it lacks is what does lapis have to do with enchanting the idea as a whole makes NO sense what so ever. I'm not implying that Minecraft itself makes sense. Edit: It's pretty OP that you can get an enchant THAT LOW though...
so?
if they keep doing survival updates, then they would totally forget about the mapmakers?
just ONE of the updates goes to mapmakers, and everyone loses their minds?
Well thing is, we were told it wasnt only for the mapmakers:

I understand what you are saying, but overhauls are called overhauls for a reason. I'm sure that others will agree when I say I don't want huge changes every few updates. If the game is too easy, play on hard mode or try some challenges. I don't want things harder because even easy can be fustrating. It makes sense that the last big overhaul was in Beta because to game wasn't finished yet. Really, Minecraft's future lies in its community and the content it creates. Mojang recognises that, and the features they have introduced are revolutionary.
This isn't just an update for map-makers, it's also an update for map-players.
You know what happened last time someone was really not happy with a Minecraft update? Better Than Wolves was created. I challenge any modders to pick up the same idea and be motivated to create something awesome to pick up the slack of Mojang
The Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

I'm still waiting with baited breath for seasons and regional difficulty(getting harder as you stay in one place.) MC wiki mentioned both while talking of the possibilities of dev. Did I miss a development?
But let me just say that I'm totally fine with waiting. I get that survival players aren't the only ones playing. If I was a mapper (player or maker) I know I would be totally psyched right now. Way to go Mojang.
