You don't really have to since there are no major terrain changes. So far, the only change for terrain is the new stone types. Though, you could always delete some chunks to get those closer by.
If you go with the snap shot, remember that reverting back will empty all your chest's, inv, item frames, and so on..... I personally start a new world with the snap shots.
What is this talk about creating a new world after an update? I won't be able to keep playing in the one I am in? I have spent a lot of time on this world (my first!).

The OP wants a new world for the sake of new world-generation, new stone, etc. You'll be able to keep playing in your current world once 1.8 rolls out, but you won't find the new stone underground (in loaded chunks). You'll also suffer weird walls at the end of your generated terrain.
Now, can we have 1.6.4 terr-gen, with 1.7 biomes? Or is 1.8 the same as 1.7 gen? Because 1.7 sucks...esp. with the new taigas and extreme hills.
Never do anything you care about in the snapshots. They are 99% guaranteed to have nasty bugs, and not infrequently the bugs can irreversibly damage your world. The primary point of the snapshot system is for players to find the showstopper bugs so the releases are at least unlikely to trash your worlds. Secondary is for players to doodle around with the new stuff and see how they like it.
In this case, unlike 1.6 -> 1.7, you're not going to get nasty boundaries between old and new sections. So there's almost no disadvantage to starting in 1.7 and upgrading later.

When new updates get released it is sometimes a bit off-putting when the world gen has changed even with some of the smaller updates. I lost a few maps that way since sometimes you end up with a mountain cut in half and the new chunks are something else entirely. Any new blocks that are added like the new stone ones will barely make any difference to your maps except maybe where a few chunks merge so need to worry this time
I lost my first world when they did that, then I lost my second when they added the end, because it was generated before strongholds were added. I still say go with the snapshot now, even if a bug kills the world, you can consider it a trial run for the full release.

as stated before, the new stones will not generate in chunks you have already explored - so if you want those then you will have to travel to new areas to get it...this update so far doesn't show a need to start a new world, but some have in the past. for example, when the end was added, we needed to start new worlds because the strongholds are generated when the map is, so maps made prior to that can't go to the end.
Now, can we have 1.6.4 terr-gen, with 1.7 biomes? Or is 1.8 the same as 1.7 gen? Because 1.7 sucks...esp. with the new taigas and extreme hills.
The snapshot still has the 1.7 gen - what would be nice is if they would add the ability to choose any terr-gen you want, with whatever biomes you want, and whatever game rules you want (I.E. 1.2 terrain, 1.7 biomes - with current mobs, strongholds, etc.
I am running 1.74 right now. Do you have to have separate clients for each version? For example, when 1.8 comes out and I want to still play 1.74 and play in 1.8 do I need two different versions?
Also Don't forget to click the green button that is showing a sign that is facing up!

I have not noticed a loss in fps. Please present a test that can show us that this is consistent with other's findings.

1.7.4: 50 fps average on a regular world 60 on super flat world.
1.8: 10 fps average on a regular world 20 on a super flat world.
Whatever they are doing is mucking up my game. So I'm avoiding snapshots until full 1.8 comes.
