To be fair, punching isn't the only way to kill them anymore. Even TNT that you light is considered a player-triggered mechanic, i.e. blown-up mobs from TNT that you light will drop XP, like in Etho's Ender Ender. We just have to modify our farms to drop the golems into an iron pool, and have player-lit TNT drop on them. Sure, you can't AFK at the farms anymore and let the iron build up, but nobody could at an XP farm anyway, so there's not much of an issue here.
I'm not sure if splash damage potions are considered player-triggered; haven't tried it. They might make little modification to our killing chambers necessary.
You know what, if you people want to make iron/gold farms in single-player, then please do enjoy yourself. So long as I do not see those things giving others an unfair edge in multiplayer.
Easy solution: only play on servers that don't allow farms.
This whole argument is a tiny version of what's wrong with the whole world. Some just hate to see others having fun. Some always know better and everything has be done their one right way.
It's disgusting.

As far as the nerf, I'll get around it like all the other mob farmers will, soften them and kill em manually. However the server I play on is rather beefy, some peeps are gonna get lag from this change.

If you want to play on a multiplayer server that has stuff like this removed or "fixed" from your viewpoint, get Bukkit and mod your server in a fashion that has the server behave in the fashion you want.
Frankly, I don't know anybody who runs a vanilla MC server with more than a dozen or so players, and even then it is either a noob server admin or just a group of friends who know each other and have some fun together. The few vanilla servers that might possibly be exceptions are those which are usually testing new releases or have specific roles to play that have nothing to do with the kind of concern that you are expressing.
In other words, my assertion that you need to mod Minecraft as a server operator is something that is found with every single major server you can get onto. Some of the mods are minor in the sense of being anti griefing tools, area protection, and other features not found on vanilla servers, but if you are going to bother with some mods then why not also mod for something like this... to stop farms (assuming that is the kind of gameplay you want)? Minecraft is so open that you can literally play precisely how you want to play.... so my suggestion is find the group of players which fits your philosophy on this matter.

I have to wonder how it's an unfair edge in multiplayer.
That's like saying that someone who spends time mining diamonds has an unfair edge over someone who doesn't. The second person could go hunt for diamonds, too; nobody's stopping him. If one doesn't want to do something, that doesn't mean it's unfair if someone else wants to do it.
But anyway, there's a simple solution: a /gamerule
The only people who would be unhappy with that are people who can't stand the thought that other people are having fun in a different way than they are.

How does it give someone an unfair advantage? First of all please tell me what advantage this gives. People act as though Minecraft is this PVP based competitive game. Its not! It is a sandbox game for crying out loud. What is this advantage people keep speaking of? Does having infinite iron and gold instead of just alot somehow make it easier to survive (the only real objective in survival, mind you)? No! The only reason why someone would feel that someone had an advantage over them is jealousy. Not only that if they truly thought that another player had an unfair advantage, you are welcome to build your own golem farm! You won't, but that is a you problem.

What kind of servers do you play on where people don't share?
Anyway, in other news 'things' are afoot at Mojang: #misunderstanding @Dinnerbone
I honestly don't get it ... someone is going to have to explain this to me, because as fair as I am understanding it, it doesn't sound like it solves any issues here.
Hurray...now we can spawn iron golems who can't be fully automated to drop iron... if we have enough iron.
Right .. in other words .. it really doesn't have anything to do with the current iron golem farm issues going on. Simply automating creating golems.
Don't understand why anyone would want to automate creating iron golems. One would have to have so much iron to ever think about making an iron golem construction factory.
Kinda impossible with out an actual iron golem farm rofl.

I know it's not terribly reassuring, but we will just have to wait for a picture, or at the very least, a snapshot on Thursday.
I'm not sure if the tweets are serious, Mojang trolling the community, or just a red herring. I can't imagine them making changes two weeks in a row that would inflame the community, but then I struggle to see why Mojang would take an active stance in an issue such as iron and gold farming long after they had become standard practice for many players. Anyone care to enlighten me?
I want mojang main developers to clarify their stance on mob grinder/farm in more clear manner. They sometimes mention about it on twitter and Reddit but not on main forum or the site. They could update it as they change their mind. Also, making clear their view on minecraft survival and their current long term goal.
Discussion is somehow hidden and not exposed. Hindering more active discussion on various important matters. I want hear more from developers.
Perhaps this isn't a "stance" at all. Perhaps its a challenge. Minecraft is what you make it. So you've made a gold/iron farm and have perfect villagers. Why would you go mining? Cobble? Lapis? Most players who can make these things make enough of them that caving becomes rare...and suddenly you lose interest. Maybe you restart your world...or just stop playing. But wait...Insert next update, and your "infinite supply" is suddenly finite. What do you do? Complain to the forums? Tweet Mojangites until your thumbs hurt? Not me....I'm simply going to engage my brain for the first time in a while about how to fix this problem...and exploit my next set of "game mechanics." Thats fun to me.To Mojang: Challenge Accepted!

I like that stance of yours toward Mojang.
I'm totally fine with people making any kind of farms/grinders. I know how it feels being rewarding after effort.
What bother me is the fact that they take in granted that what they are doing is totally granted and expecting it to work indefinitely. They can keep their world and play at version they want.
Stepping into game's gray zone and asking behaviors to stay as it is forever is ... not right.
Nerfing something like this effect the game greatly, in a bad way, players use their creativity to make contraptions of incredible use.
And mojang said you could build anything, overall i think this is a VERY BAD choice on mojangs part
Also, THERE ARE IRON BLOCKS say someone wants to build a very large scale spaceship out of iron blocks (i have done that before with the use of iron grinders) Mojang would expect us to go mine all the iron to make and incredibly large scale build in Survival. Iron grinders are the outcome of creativity and great thinkers in minecraft. It is just downright wrong for mojang to take that away.

Personally I think it is rather irresponsible for Mojang to "fix" these mechanics now. It is one thing for them to change something they feel is unbalanced during the production of the game/snapshot/patch however once the game mechanic has been established and been in the game for the length of time it has all they are doing now by changing the mechanic is breaking peoples worlds that quite frankly may have taken a ton of time to create. The fact of the matter is, until now, no one was complaining about the mechanic, nor have the devs even hinted that they didnt like the current system. If this was such a problem/exploit why wasnt it addressed forever ago?

Mojang has always said they had problems with mob grinders. They haven't made a big deal about it, true. They haven't moved to stop it partly because it's a hard problem and partly because they were concerned about the social blowback.
Some of Dinnerbone's tweets have hinted he's planning to automate Iron Golem construction. That might explain why Mojang is moving against full-auto iron grinders now. An infinite supply of iron blocks is one thing; an infinite supply of killer robots is quite another.

I really wonder why they've made iron golem spawn infinitely and made it drop iron, such a commonly used resource. They couldn't expect this kind of situation?! Well too late.
