I've said that this is the first snapshot on this thread, & a couple others just like it. It amazes me how irritatingly stupid some of the people on these forums are, to the point where they can't tell the difference between the first snapshot in an update, & the last.
Yeah. Hopefully people will realize it soon enough.
Just gonna throw this out here: while self-imposed challenges can add a degree of difficulty to a part of the game that is otherwise nearly devoid of it, that does not mean that self-imposed challenges are solutions to the difficulty problems the game has. The game has some very clear balance issues (e.g. food being far too easy to come by to the point of hunger being an annoyance rather than a legitimate concern, iron armor being extremely easy to get yet making the player nearly immortal, the fact that nearly the entire game is balanced around an unarmored character in a stone sword, difficulties having few differences between each other, etc).
The solution to this problem is not to just impose ridiculous challenge on yourself, like "I won't eat carrots, melons, and potatoes because it's too easy to get food from them", or "I won't craft and wear iron armor because it is OP". That's just ridiculous. That doesn't solve the problem at all; the problem still exists. You're just ignoring it. Logically, the best option is to remove the problem by Mojang releasing an update that fixes it. Not to mention that sometimes self-imposed challenges have a negative impact on the game in their own right, I can ignore using armor above iron armor since those sets of armor are OP, but that requires me to miss out on some of the Minecraft's progression, a thing Minecraft has very very little of.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Overall makes mobs more effective which makes it a lot harder. If you want more difficulty then add some yourself. As you said "THOU SHALT NOT MAKE FARM". Go ahead and make that rule for yourself. It isn't difficult to do these things.
[/background]
[background=rgb(234, 233, 220)]If you want difficult mining then restrict yourself to iron pickaxes or diamond pickaxes without enchantments. Revamping enchanting doesn't necessarily make things harder. And[/background]
You really dont read what i say and just see text and instantly reply dont you?
And how are you going to enforce the rules on a server? Tell me.
So according to your logic if I don't use mob grinders to make it more difficult for myself then that is a stupid self imposed challenge, but if mojang removes all functionality of mob grinders then that would be making the game harder...
It seems like you only want difficulty if it is forced upon you.
But I am interested about how would you make mining more difficult, revamp the enchanting system, and make hunger less of an annoyance. In ways that you could not self impose on yourself. Saying "make every ore twice as rare" is fixed by only allowing yourself to mine every other vein of ore. Saying "make good enchants more rare" is fixed by only enchanting books, and applying those with an anvil.
1. I enjoy building mob spawners because they show something i liked in MC. Thinking creativly about what you can build that will benefit you.
Again, making rules that are mostly limitations dont make it difficult.
How about making cauldrons better? Or simple:
Brewing stands now only spawn in witch huts. No crafting recipe,
Tada, Brewing stands now require you to 'splore. it now has been form early/mid game depending how you look at it. To end game.
Any recipe that interacts with redstone in any way requires redstone in its recipe.
And so on and so on.
Sorry this post may seem messy. MCF got down for me.
This is the first snapshot. The first. This doesn't represent all of what will be added in 1.8. There are probably going to be a few more snapshots after this that will tweak the new things that have been added a little more. And regardless, so what if it's a small update? Mojang has made 4 major updates in a row now. I think a break would be nice.
And about the difficulty aspect: So you think that limitations aren't "real difficulty?" If Mojang suddenly removed enchanting you would be fine with it, but if you make the decision to just not use enchanting that's "fake?" I don't really get your logic here.
Ok, i might jumped the gun fast but im getting ed by 1 update that made exploring so darn easy and added OP horses, 1 that is only decorative which mods do better.

Ok, enchanting : If they would remove it. Oh wait, they wouldn't.
I want enchanting better. Like 1 lapis block in the enchantment table and it will be consumed. Now you see item 1 of the enchant till you reset it by replacing your *wannabeenchantedItem*. Then remove the lapis renewable. Make it a tad more rare and tada. a way to make enchanting take atleast some bit of mining to be sure you get good stuff.

I disagree Kholdstare, it's ridiculously hard if you don't set up a base / can't find food / have not built a shelter before nightfall on the first day. Then monsters kill you, then having to journey back, find belongings, then die again because of no food.
I played 1.7.3 Beta and I do agree about the iron armor making you stronger, but not immortal, because it breaks.
3 New stone types, Cool. Nothing big. Shouldn't take more than 30 min to code or so.
The only people worse than programmers at estimating man-hours put into a software feature are non-programmers. (the former because estimates are so frequently made "I'll add that, shouldn't take too long" before a two-week excursion trying to add said simple feature, and the latter because, well, they don't know what they are talking about.
of course in between are the people that kinda know how to program, but they are usually even farther off the mark than non-programmers, due to inflated hubris.
Enchanting itself is still crap. You cant easily switch what you can get for example.
I must have missed your arguments and information that showed that unless you can specifically select enchantments, whatever system is created is crap.
You first gotta enchant a trash item and then hope again.
It's very similar to what it was before, only now you can avoid putting enchantments you do not want on your more valuable materials. Not to mention an enchant that might give your sword Bane of Arthropods could very well give a pickaxe Silk Touch or Fortune.
Repairing is so bloody cheap, its overpowered, i got a sword with like Sharpness IV. Knockback III and looting III. had to repair it. less than 10 levels for a 1 durability left sword.
It's cheaper now, however now the cost goes up even if it's renamed. Would be nice if renamed items capped out at 39, so they could always be repaired, possibly also make repairing more expensive again. Actually come to think of it, enchanting could do with being more expensive too, maybe two or three times as expensive in terms of levels. If I had to guess I'd say lapis was either going to be changed or possibly revised such that different materials allow different enchantment levels.
I dont get why they didn't left it with no recipe.
"I don't get why they don't have recipes" -Lots of people when 1.8 was released
Villager trading. Meh, some new sub-villagers and so on. Looked at screenies and 16 emeralds for a powerfull swords seems so easy.
Simply murder some zombies at night to get 1 stack of flesh. Then sell that for 2 emeralds. Go mine in extreme hill with your diamond sword you got in your first/second day of playing ingame and get like 14 emeralds. Done.
How would you mine using a diamond sword? IF you mean a diamond pick, Emeralds are not exactly common enough such that you could find 14, and if you are in a position where you could enchant with fortune you could also enchant a sword anyway.
This update doesn't deserve to be called big, i see this more as 1.7.5 :/
The update is not called "big" the list is headered "Big survival changes" because those are the changes so far that apply to survival.

Meh, i have added Blocks and stuff in the game myself. making a new type of stone that generated around diamond level and with a cobble-pillar-smooth-brick-cracked brick didnt take long, around 10 min or so :/
SinisterBro and Kholdstare- this guys. We need more people like you.
I will tell it once again.
We need Hardstone- a stone that needs at least iron to be broken.
And put it randomly in vines of 6-7 Under the sea levels. 0-2 per chunk
You collect lots of materials so that you can collect materials more efficiently. The only problem is that tool is more or less the only and best thing you can make with those materials so collecting more is redundant
Why to not make more “building stations” ?
The anvil should be needed to CREATE iron, gold and diamond stuff, when the enchanted anvil should do what it does now.
There should be a grinder item that uses iron and wood to make. It would grind wheat-> flour, make dyes, more efficiently, make bonemeal more efficiently (1bone -> 4 bonemeal, on hand: 1 bone -> 2bonemeal).

Agree somewhat. I was kind of despairing at this thread, until I saw those posts. Still, their ideas are not perfect.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
Judging an entire update on a snapshot is like judging a painting that's not even finished. It's not done yet. Hold your horses, anything could be changed. Not every update has to be vast in size to be good. No matter what is changed, not everyone is going to like it. Ever. I seen some people who hate smaller oceans, I've seen some people who are in the love with it. Think about the arguments about losing the red rose in the 1.7.
If you play the game, there will be changes you don't like. If I don't like the change, I don't have to update. I didn't like the 1.6 endless zombie hoards, I stuck with 1.5.
Minecraft is designed to appeal to a wide audience of people. I don't understand why some want difficultly to be forced onto everyone. There are a lot of casual gamers who want to build instead fight off an endless horde of mobs with genius AI. Others love the opposite or both even. Why should Mojang go out of their way to please the more advanced players to lose their audience of new and casual players? Not every single thing Mojang does will appeal to you.
Try to play MInecraft to the end without ever using a crafting bench. There are plenty of mods out there that also make the game more difficult. Now we can go back and play older versions, that's also possible. If enchanting is too easy, don't enchant anything. Harder enchanting in the game would result in the same result, enchanting isn't making you OP. There are other ways to make the game more difficult and get what you like out of Minecraft other that demanding Mojang give you what you want on a forum.
But keep in mind, not everyone wants the game more difficult. It Mojang's job to cater to everyone, not just one particular group.
Think about the arguments about losing the red rose in the 1.7.
I'm still mad about that. Mojang removed the red rose early in the snapshot process and everybody was like "don't get your panties in a wad, I'm sure they'll add them back after they hear all this feedback." Nothing.
This is what we're getting for 1.8. I know it's not much use complaining, because Mojang doesn't care about its customers anymore, but I guess I'm just hopelessly optimistic.

I was also not very happy about it. It's possible it might be coming back though it's unlikely, as said before, we don't know what will added just from the first freaking snapshot.
If enchanting is too easy, don't enchant anything.
This is one thing you white knights don't seem to understand. I want to do enchanting. I like enchanting. I want it to be a part of my game. But it feels too easy.
It's not a solution to tell me not to use that part of the game. In order to properly enjoy the game, I have to create an elaborate set of rules for how much enchanting I'm allowed to do. And at that point, I'm literally doing game design, which should be Mojang's job. I don't want to make up rules for myself to follow. That's not fun for me. But in order to have fun playing the game, I have to do the extra non-fun step of figuring out game balance.

I said this again and again. The update ain't gonna do a 180 and change everything about it.
The ''Dont update then'' logic is dumb, look. if i didn't want to update i would be stuck at beta 1.8 or so, i want to update but i want some sence and difficulty in the updates.

Read what Kholdstare said.

Just my response to the recent enchanting other than mods, I agree that it's ridiculously OP in it's current state. It might be changed, it might not. It's an solution. It might not a convenient solution but it is solution. Looking for alternatives and a solution regardless of how convenient is the first step to fixing a problem. Simply not liking the new enchanting doesn't do anything.

This doesn't seem to make any sense as a response to what you've quoted from my post. I also doubt that you've added anything to the game. And if you did it isn't going to be an accurate representation of how easy it is to do.
Disregarding that, however- I find the idea that a feature being easy to add is somehow detrimental to it's value.
For one thing, the only reason it would be easy to add would be because of how the game was written, which allows new blocks to be added relatively easily. (Queue discussion by people with 0 code-side citations about how the Minecraft is "badly-coded").
The reason such a change is "big" even if the code-side change was small is because it is going to be in every single copy of vanilla Minecraft from 1.8 forwards.
This is one thing you white knights don't seem to understand.
I've seen people use this term a lot with regards to defending or advocating the developers choices. I don't think they know what it means, considering it is a pejorative for men that will defend women on the internet regardless of what is actually taking place.
Either way, I think any argument which starts with a pejorative term for those you are responding to is a poor one, regardless of whether that pejorative makes any sense.
I want to do enchanting. I like enchanting. I want it to be a part of my game. But it feels too easy.
Well with such a massive sample size of one, based entirely on feelings, It's a surprise anybody disagrees.
At the moment its reversed, they are losing there advanced players while more new people join in because its so damned easy the advanced players get bored as heck.
This is an assumption. There is no evidence, or citations you can provide to show that "they are losing (their) advanced players". Not the least reason being that "advanced player" has no good definition and of course there aren't exactly exit polls. Fundamentally you are basically just making it up.
The ''Dont update then'' logic is dumb, look. if i didn't want to update i would be stuck at beta 1.8 or so, i want to update but i want some sence and difficulty in the updates.
I can't make any sense out of this. The logic is dumb... "If you didn't want to update you would be using beta 1.8" (why aren't you? Why Beta 1.8?) Conversely, why do you want to update? If the update has features you give "minus points", for what reason would you update to it?
Simply not liking the new enchanting doesn't do anything.
Nor does lumping all opposition into a pejorative that doesn't apply...
I said this again and again. The update ain't gonna do a 180 and change everything about it.

Exactly. Lean one way, you lose the other. Lean to the other, you also lose the other. There should be more ways to adjust your difficulty to your liking. That wouldn't hurt an entire sales demographic, the game doesn't have to be either one or the other. You have godly skilled players who can just kill any sort of challenge, players who aren't and people who are in the middle. When trying to make the game easier for some, it will be too easy for some. I think there should be a way to tweak how difficult thinks are to your liking that actually matters.
I wouldn't conciser making the existing features non-OP a big 180, also we don't know what else is coming is making the game more OP. We don't, all there is is speculation. There could be anything in the works right now and it's too early to proclaim that it's a mini-update. Keep letting Mojang know what you think of the new changes, perhaps they will listen.

im keeping it simple this time because im getting tired and then my grammar and goes down the hole.
I want mojang to go the middle way, not go all Btw insanely difficult to the field of annoying sometimes.
but also not the easy peasy everybody who plays can win it way.
So i want them to spice the difficulty up a notch or so. then keep the middle ground on there. With that i dont mean
like a super tiny change that doesn't do crap.
I mean something big but still usefull and not grindy,
For example the idea of requiring a anvil to make metal tools and so is fine for me.
Then using some magical material (like blaze rods) with redstone dust in a smelter which is made of iron to create some magic dust thingy that you use on the anvil to make it able to do its magicly stuff,
.
I can't make any sense out of this. The logic is dumb... "If you didn't want to update you would be using beta 1.8" (why aren't you? Why Beta 1.8?) Conversely, why do you want to update? If the update has features you give "minus points", for what reason would you update to it?
I screwed that sentence up. Ok here it goes
If i had the choice to not update on a mojang update, i would still be at beta/alpha stages because those in my opinion have some challenge.
sadly the mods which i play go to newer versions, Same goes for the Servers.
Also, i did made blocks. i know a bit of java and i can code a bit of forge. but i say this, adding blocks that generate and there *Insert cracked and mossy and so on here* stuff doesn't take long at all. ok, i might was a little wrong in the assumption, but it took me 60 minutes. And they are proffesional (Atleast i think they are,)
Dude its not 'small'. Firstly your only looking at the survival side. And even that isnt small, the rock veins are hard to code as you need to check if there is any near them, how far, what type, how high, any other veins etc. Then they have to check it and see if its too close together or too far apart or if its just right. Then they did some crafting recipes which from my understanding isnt very hard, but then they have to think 'is it too easy to get? is it too hard to get?'. To decide that they have to do research and polls etc of players gender, age, how long theyve been playing. Then they check for ID clashes (shouldnt take long). Then the slime blocks they have to create the recipe how it acts, fire resistant, what it does when contacted with water, lava. Then they have to see how it reacts with mobs, how mobs react with it, if certain actions react with it, does the block change in some way in other conditions.
But then theres the adventure mode part of the update, and believe me, thats big and leads to so many opportunities. If you were an 'experienced player' you would know that and heck, ive only been playing for a year and a half. Have you seen the claw machine someone made? Also theres a command that can teleport entities now (boats and minecarts are entities btw) so you can teleport mobs and even minecarts for epic rollercoasters or redstone contraptions.
Also they have to decide on textures and see how it looks in the actual world and they have to look on forums like thee to see what people want. Then they have to try to improve performance and fix bugs, and prepare things for big future updates.
So really, they arent lazy and this is just a tiny part of what they do. Before judging an update see what you can do with it first, there are many circuits and command block things you can make anyway
Well, playing since begin alpha for the survival aspect and not for the screw around aspect, and being able to basicly complete MC to the credits+wither in like 5 ingame days, i say im pretty good.
Well, the commands, great. Now give me something i can use in survival will you?.
Because last time i know Tping mobs aint survival. huh> nice, a claw machine. coooool. Not survival.
They didnt seem to try to fit the horse into the game in style so.
Yeah. Hopefully people will realize it soon enough.
Meh, i have added Blocks and stuff in the game myself. making a new type of stone that generated around diamond level and with a cobble-pillar-smooth-brick-cracked brick didnt take long, around 10 min or so :/
Yes, this is so true.
Agree somewhat. I was kind of despairing at this thread, until I saw those posts. Still, their ideas are not perfect.
aka diamond?
Yes, I like the sound of these things.

I assume you were being sarcastic. What an incredible change; it's like a whole new game!
Jeb's Law should be more like "Regardless of what change I do, no matter how small, I will find a way to screw it up."

At the moment its reversed, they are losing there advanced players while more new people join in because its so damned easy the advanced players get bored as heck.

Read what Kholdstare said.
Mods? Yes, atm being forced to use them for difficulty. I want some normal difficulty in mc itself, not go out of my way to download a mod for something mojang is supposed to do.
Ye, cater everyone they said. By making the game easy they didn't say.
Well with such a massive sample size of one, based entirely on feelings, It's a surprise anybody disagrees.
This is an assumption. There is no evidence, or citations you can provide to show that "they are losing (their) advanced players". Not the least reason being that "advanced player" has no good definition and of course there aren't exactly exit polls. Fundamentally you are basically just making it up.
I can't make any sense out of this. The logic is dumb... "If you didn't want to update you would be using beta 1.8" (why aren't you? Why Beta 1.8?) Conversely, why do you want to update? If the update has features you give "minus points", for what reason would you update to it?
Nor does lumping all opposition into a pejorative that doesn't apply...
Then using some magical material (like blaze rods) with redstone dust in a smelter which is made of iron to create some magic dust thingy that you use on the anvil to make it able to do its magicly stuff,
I screwed that sentence up.
And they are proffesional (Atleast i think they are,)
Well, playing since begin alpha for the survival aspect and not for the screw around aspect, and being able to basicly complete MC to the credits+wither in like 5 ingame days, i say im pretty good.
Well, the commands, great. Now give me something i can use in survival will you?.
Because last time i know Tping mobs aint survival. huh> nice, a claw machine. coooool. Not survival.
They didnt seem to try to fit the horse into the game in style so.
