I had built a little hunting cabin in a Taiga biome, with snow. It was a pretty little snow-covered cabin. I also gathered snow and ice from the area to use in other places.
Now, it's pouring down rain on my cabin. So now, if i gather the snow, there won't be any more. It was also my retreat to get away from the obnoxious loud rain, and watch the pretty snowflakes... but now it's just obnoxious rain, on my snowy cabin. Not too happy about that, at all.
Taiga biomes were now considered to have an "average" temperature, and will no longer generate snow. There is a somewhat rare variation called Cold Taiga, which is exactly like the pre-1.7 Taiga.
That's great and all. Are you going to come pick up and move my cabin to one of these new biomes?Or better yet, move one of the new biomes within a nice walking distance to my farm, because that's where i want my snowy cabin to be, like it has been for the past year or so.

Way to thank someone for answering your question. Creeper up there didn't make the changes, take it up with Mojang, or you know, get used to it/rebuild/go back to 1.6.4 like everyone else. All you had to do was check the wiki for the changes in 1.7.2 and you'd have known this.
I wasn't asking a questing, I was voicing my opinion, like everyone else does on the forums.
Just because I KNOW something doesn't mean I have to LIKE it or be OKAY with it. No one told me a YEAR AGO when I built the cabin that there wouldn't always be snow there.
Okay, I actually didn't know that the regular (1.64) previously-generated Taiga we have now was actually going to be changed to snowless taiga after updating a world. Maybe I didn't read enough in depth on this, but I was under the impression that the update wouldn't really do anything much to existing terrain. This kinda ruins the plan I had for one of my bases on server...
I'd also have to agree that I hope Mojang adjusts the biomes a little to allow for some snowless mountains, for variety. This might semi-ruin a very large mountain city we're building ATM. :/
Minecraft is, and always has been, an ever changing game. You can either play 1.6, or 1.7, not both.
It would have been nice if current biomes were unaffected. I.E., old Taiga becomes Snowy Taiga and new Taiga can just come in newly generated areas. I don't know if that was a technical problem or just an oversight... but either way, it's just not how it is.

Personally, I hope for seasons in a future update. There will be a few cold biomes that are always cold/snowy, like now... But then like, once every, I dunno, 30 Minecraft days for example, the season could change. Spring flowers, fall colors and pumpkins, winter snow. etc.
Something similar happened to me. Back when I was a newb I made a horrible castle made of obsidian in a small extreme hills biome. When I figured out how to make snow golems, I covered the castle in them to stop all the mobs that spawned from all the poorly lit areas of the castle. All the snow they left looked ugly, so I used TMI to switch to survival (This was before 1.3, so there was no legitimate way to change gamemode in vanilla) and I dug away the snow using a shovel. Little did I know that a year later an update would cause it to get covered in snow every time weather kicked in.
I hate the design and layout I picked but I always derp around in it from time to time.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
It was a bad move to change the Taiga to not be snowy. I think it would have been better if the previous Taiga had just been renamed to Cold Taiga and the new Taiga be the non-snowy varient. That way, people who were living in Taigas previously wouldn't receive a change in climate.

It's a bummer, really.
I suppose this is what I assumed was going to happen. Well, we know what happens when one assumes things. In any case, with the particular projects I'm concerned about, I'm sure we can adjust. My personal project isn't even at the stage that requires a snowy climate for the build, so I can change my plan a bit; and the mountaintop city, as it happens, is now populated by the Stark family from Game of Thrones, so having it snow up there might be fitting anyway. It's still a bit disappointing and while it's not a huge deal breaker to me it's a couple of things I do wish they'd adjust for variety/old time's sake. Other people's builds might not be so flexible.
Right, they shouldn't have changed our existing biomes like that. I saw the note about making sure to "load up all your important areas" in 1.6.4, and did just that, on my personal world as well as my server world. What's upsetting me, is our server world has changed, and it's not as simple as me just building a cabin somewhere else. We have our central community, and we all built homesteads around it, everyone's homestead being on the same map as our central village. I had built a marina in a bay, and other waterways for travel between homes, so the boat control changes really screwed us up. Now, they fixed the boat controls, and we have all this new stuff... flowers, colored glass, different fish... great stuff, we were excited.
My homestead is a farm, with a nice big house, barn, pastures of livestock, and a neighboring village that i fixed up and expanded for a place to trade with villagers. There was a taiga spot between my home and my friend's home, and i went there and built a cabin and an icehouse. I used that spot to "farm" snow and ice for use elsewhere. I had built a bridge crossing the river from my homestead to the where the cabin was, it wasn't far away, a nice short walk.
One of the newer residents of the server, from my family, had chosen a taiga island for her homestead. That island was neighboring her boyfriend's island, it was the perfect location for her, as she loved the snow and wanted to be close to him.
So, my cabin area is ruined, and her island is ruined. Actually, as it is now, i don't think there are any snowy places on our map anymore at all. So our (somewhat spread out) community has to just disband and move away from each other?
Yeah, there have been changes to Minecraft since i started playing. But the previous changes have not completely destroyed/altered our existing work. People are saying "just switch back to 1.6.4"... okay and give up all the new things and the fixed boat controls? Like others are saying, the existing taigas should remain snowy taigas, and have snow when it "rains", just like before. Adding non-snowy taigas is fine, but they shouldn't have changed our existing ones. Nor should they have added snow to existing hills.
Taigas now do not have snow by default. Cold Taiga is similar to the pre-1.7 taigas, and if you load your old world that contains snowy taigas, they will be simply called "Cold Taiga".

If only. Have you read the thread? The "old world" taigas were CHANGED, and now DO NOT have snow. They were NOT "simply" converted to "Cold Taiga".
Yes, this was a poorly executed change, but you can always use MCEdit to change the biome to cold taiga. It's not cheating if the current state wasn't caused by you. (I'm not saying this should be a permanent solution, but I'm saying it's all you can do at the moment.)
There's one other thing you can do: go way way way up into the sky and build a glass roof over everything. (Edit to add: use one of the stained glass if you can get enough dye, because the partially transparent stained glass will be less visible from a distance.) This prevents the rain from falling on your snowy area. Now, plop snow golems down in the snowy region so they replenish the snow.

I'm freezing on top of a smallish hill that used to not be cold.
Dang global cooling.
