I must say I strongly dislike this new feature. It works exactly backwards.
In case you didn't notice, when you go into any covered location (forest, building or cave) as you move further from sunlight, the horizon now darkens (as if you were moving into a dark room). moving though a forest causes the horizon to actually strobe, light dark light dark etc. Its very annoying. It also ruins the look of the sunset.
I selected my house location because of the sunset, but it looks terrible when inside my house now.
When I say its backwards I mean, the horizon should get brighter. In real life, When you move into a dark area, the pupils dilate to let in more light. When inside a dark room the outside looks brighter. not darker.
Also when outside and looking into a dark area, its difficult to see until your eyes adjust to the dark.
If this effect is what they are trying to simulate, it's not working.
What do you think? Do you like it or not?
EDIT: 10/29/2013 I found where someone said that Dinnerbone said its a bug. Unfortunately that turned out to be wrong and its a "feature".
Same here. I not only picked my building spot with a good view to the west, but I cleared trees and even removed a small hill that was partly obstructing my view of the sunset. I put in a huge windows so I could enjoy it. Now it looks terrible. I want my sunset back!
Things like the creepers ignoring cats are more of an issue for functionality, but the lighting thing is unpleasant. There is no such thing anymore as looking out your window at a nice sunny day like I am IRL right now; in Minecraft, now it's always gloomy.
I'm glad to hear this is a bug; I'd originally heard it was a feature, and I've been irked ever since. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next snapshot or two. (now if only they'd give us our roses back....)
If used correctly however, I really think this can add a lot of feel to the game. Like for incoming stormy weather and the like. But so far I actually like it. I agree it doesn't happen at the right time, but it looks so good

The problem is, it makes everything look like incoming stormy weather -- if you're inside. And nothing, if you're outside.
I don't understand what's to like. It's counter-intuitive. It's not realistic. It's not artistic. It's not beneficial in any way, and it's annoying in several.
Could they use the concepts in the future to do something useful? Sure. But "could be useful for some other purpose at some unspecified future time" does not equal "is useful for this purpose today."
It seems I was mistaken and someone "SAID" dinerbug said it was a bug. Apparently, it's a "feature". Maybe it's nit pickling but it just looks wrong.
Is everyone else ok with it?
Suggestion:
Instead of screwing up the horizons, couldn't they just vary the brightness temporarily until your virtual eyes adjust. If it were based on the light level of the block you were standing on instead of exposure to the sky, then moving into a bright room like my house would have no affect, while moving into a covered forest or cave would temporarily look very dark until then gradually return to normal after a few seconds.
Food for though perhaps, but I hope the grey horizons go away.
First time this happened I thought a storm was coming. Its a blunder, they should remove this effect for all cases, and save it for only when Its about to rain. That would be nice.
I agree, it looks really weird. It's like reverse HDR lighting and it's really awkward. I'm replying in hopes of someone having found a workaround, or something.

I heard this was added to stop you from seeing the sun or moon at the end of a long tunnel. Too bad it still doesn't work for that and instead just ruins the atmospehere of Minecraft.
Supposedly, this was added so you don't see "light" at the end of long tunnels underground; however, they should have made it work like the void does; when above sea level the void is blue, turning black below sea level (except for superflat maps), basically an extension of the old void fog mechanics, which does turn fog black but only near bedrock.
Also, a similar effect is present in previous versions, more noticeable on lower render distances (slightly noticeable on Normal; entire sky turns black on Tiny) when you go under something, although if it is lit up it doesn't happen (1.7.2 seems to do something else; this is just fog darkening)
If your house is in a forest, this is going to irritate you big time.
"Oh, what time is it? Wait, I have to get out from under a tree or else it looks like a storm is coming."
It would be a cool graphic effect before it starts to rain, might be annoying to not be able to see the sun but it would at least make sense.

Let me know if my posts are helpful or if you like them. That's what I'm here for.
I am currently lurking more than I am posting. I haven't gone anywhere.
Yes, I hate this "feature". It's counterintuitive and not conducive to feeling like you are in a world that has realistic lighting. It ruins any screenshots looking out from a house or cave and makes it nearly pointless to have a nice sunset view window. I don't understand at all what they were trying to do with this effect, if in fact it was intentional.
If we are talking about RL then zombies, creepers and what not dont happen. Is it annoying yes but dont go about well in RL this happens with out point out EVERYTHING that not in RL in this game
Well all know Mojang been having issues with how lighting works in MC so hopefully this is the right step and they further build on it and correct some of the things

Don't be ridiculous. This is a Mojang attempt to make light behave more realistically. Therefore any comparison to RL makes perfect sense.

I was trying to think of a signature and this is what came up.
Check out the nether with this 'fog', you thought hunting ghasts was bad already? Now you're stuck seeing 20 blocks out.
I thought all this bug did was change the fog color? It shouldn't lower your visible distance. That's an independent thing (the render distance). The fog is now dark/Black in the Nether as opposed to the pale Red it was before, which gives a darker illusion, but it shouldn't actually make you see less further out.
Note that my experience with 1.7.x is limited, but that's what I recall from it. It should just be changing the fog color and not lowering how far out you can see.

I am going outside, wonder what time of day it is, or what the weather is like? Well, can't tell from looking out this window now!

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

The peripheral vision I can live with because now at least I have the distance that was missing from before, so it's been 'Happy Happy Happy!'
