I have been having a really difficult time finding wolves in the new snapshots. There seem to be tons of other animals in forests... but no wolves. I eventually resorted to spawning seed after seed and found a single pack in about 13 or 14 forests.
What have your experiences been like: Same as always, more, or fewer wolves?
Oh, and does anyone know if depopulating an area improves the odds of new neutral mobs spawning there?
Cats on the other hand are nigh impossible for me to find since Jungles have all but vanished in my world. I seriously spent an hour each travelling North, South, East and West for one and still can't find one in the new terrain generation.
Still get Deserts and Savannah, but mostly acres of Birch Forests and Taiga cover the landscape now...
I don't see them as that rare, even though I've only found only one (he spawned alone I guess) in my Survival World.
I can't think of any advice to give when looking other than just keep trying. :/

My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..
I might be Moderator, but don't bother treating me too special. And don't make tons of Ban Hammer jokes, please. Also, I'm an Off-Topic only Mod. Don't ask me to lock a thread or something if it's not in the off-topic
It depends a lot on the seed. Most of the time, you're pretty sure to find wolves after exploring a dozen different forest biomes. So you may find some in the very first forest you explore, but usually it takes more epxloraition.
In about 4/5 of the seeds I made, I found wolves in the first MapUnit I mapped (you know, 1 MapUnit = 2048x2048 blocks = 1 maximum zoomed Minecraft map item).

I've tried to be thorough, but without being able to interrogate the game engine directly, it's always possible I've missed some.
My search "algorithm" is fairly primitive, I just make a map and run around forests, killing anything that isn't a wolf and using the entity count from the debug screen to look for new targets.
Has anyone seen wolves spawn in the new forest types (roofed, birch etc)? I haven't spent much on those since they are a bit of an unknown.
I've seen enough wolves exploring in the snapshots. I thought nothing of it, seems like a normal amount of wolves compared to 1.6 to me. Wolves have always been a bit of a rarer mob. They are definitely out there in the snapshots.
Correct me if I'm wront, but I think it's the same wolf/ocelot problem that's been around for ages, since they overhauled passive animal spawning: these two are the only passive mobs that automatically despawn, which doesn't play nice with the spawning algorithm.
Say you discovered a new taiga biome (where wolves can actually spawn) that's loaded for the first time in your world. Initially, minecraft randomly spawns a decent amount of animals, e.g. 50 sheep and 10 wolves. However, if you stay away from that biome for too long, the wolves will despawn while the 50 sheep remain. Note that the wolves won't respawn at this point, since the spawn cap for passive animals is ridiculously low (11) in comparison to the amount of animals that are originally spawned.
So the only way to make wolves respawn in that biome would be to kill off the sheep. But even if you managed to find and kill them all, you'd only get a couple of respawns, possibly without any wolves at all.
That being said, the best way to find wolves should be to find new taiga/forest biomes and instantly explore them, before the wolves get a chance to despawn.
Not the same problem for me, I started a new survival world a week ago and played LAN with my friends and I have found at least 8 wolves and I have tamed 6 of them, though 3 have died. Wolf spawning depends on what biome your in, they are relatively common in the non-Snowy taigas.

In my current seed I had to travel 5000 blocks to find wolves in a cold tigia, so yes... they seem rare, but I think it varies from seed to seed. On the other hand. My spawn is near a plains with multiple herds of horses and donkeys. Normally I have to explore for a while to find them.

Please actually read posts before responding, so you don't end up looking stewped.

You either play infrequently, way too many adventure maps, or have horrid luck.
Being an avid hater of them, I have noticed no obnoxiousness anywhere.
Hmm....
Stay fluffy~

We eventualy brought back 3 wolves for both of us. Very nice.
I find cats much more frequently than wolves.
I'll keep looking!
