It's fake difficulty. Like many have said, all you have to do is use a trap door or make a floating base.
I don't think you people understand. Minecraft is not a military strategy game. It was created for building and exploring. You shouldn't have to hole up in a skybase just to explore your world and find interesting stuff. It's FPS players like you that are ruining the point of the game. If you want hack and slash, there are servers like MineZ for that. Let us enjoy our vanilla in peace.
I kinda feel like they should also limit the new potion/gold apple nerfs to Hard as well, for the same reason. If Hard isn't that much of an extra challenge, what's the point of having difficulty settings? Again, none of it affects my playstyle to an extreme degree or to the point I am completely raging about it. I just don't think it makes a lot of sense to have it work exactly the same way on Easy as Hard/Hardcore. It's kind of weird and overly simplistic. (I feel the same about the skeletons' ridiculous rate of fire, fine for Hard but stupid on Easy.) The people who like these changes the most would likely have been playing on Hard or Hardcore already. It would make it more 'special' that way.
It floats. I built it. By hand. I also built everything around it. By hand. Plus it was built around an entrance to an extensive cave system. Whats the difference between what i have done and what you do?
Minecraft is about building whatever you want. You shouldn't be restricted to building skybases because that's the only way to survive. if you spend day and night working on a monument, you shouldnt have to rush into a 2x2 hole at night to survive. You should be able to explore freely without worrying about 120+ zombies at any moment. Even if you did explore to build the house, you're restricted to building that house and no other house because its the only way to survive. You should be able to build anything you want without worrying about massive hordes of zombies, no matter whether its a mundane house or a castle.
Normal is too hard and hard is too easy. The only difference is increased mob attack damage and dying of hunger. The whole difficulty system needs to be re-balanced. Of course the whole difficulty thing can completely ignored if one has a bed...or an iron door...or dirt to block off the entrance of your shelter.
Btw, desert temples are one of the worst places to defend from a horde of zombies.
I was all for this update, and was very happy until my first night building in a town I made.
In the middle of building something, I heard a zombie breaking down a door. So I went over found where he was, and killed him. No big deal. So I go around the corner, and I hear a zombie breaking a door down again. So I run back around the corner, and there is another zombie there, at the same door. I was like "Ok, he had a friend I didn't see". So I killed Zombie #2.
This repeated until morning.
Needless to say, this needs to be changed. I'm all for hordes of zombies coming at you. But in a protected village with no open borders (it is entirely fenced in) less than 10 blocks from where you kill one, another spawns almost immediately, right in front of the same house. And this is on a server running on normal difficulty. I LIKE that zombies spawn in towns and give you a zombie apocalypse to worry about. But this is ridiculous now. This makes it impossible to get anything done at night. And no amont of iron golems can take care of this when you have an epicly large town. Killing magic zombies that spawn instantly in 100% light levels in fenced off towns to attack the same house is ANNOYING, not HARD or CHALLENGING. Frankly, it is just frustrating me and the other players on my server.
They can at least make this configurable so that server admins can turn down the spawn rate at night, or turn off the new spawn rate completely. There is absolutely no reason to hardcode this functionality into the game at all difficulty levels. It should be able to be controlled like most other things of this nature.
Yes, but you are drastically missing the point here.
I like your house. It's neat. I'm glad you got to build what you wanted to.
What about those of us that don't want to deal with the crazy new zombie (and other more "difficult") features?
I've really yet to see ONE SINGLE PERSON make any reasonable and logical argument for why they shouldn't limit these new difficulty features to only be while playing on the "Hard" setting. If Mojang would just do that, everyone would win.
I've just downloaded 1.6.1 and all three nights i've had have started with almost no mobs then zombies after zombies after zombies (at least 4 on me at all time) for the rest of the night. I'd like to know if it's a bug in the spawn mechanic that make zombies spawn way more often, if it's a feature or if I'm just THAT unlucky.
Thanks
Also this happens in caves and dark places, I see zombies more often that other mobs ( like 3 to 1)
Downloaded it? Where? I'm not judging if you got it off of torrent or anything.
I started a new world on Hard to see what the fuss is all about. I had no problems dealing with the Zombies at all.
During the first day I built a 3x3 dirt house on a 2 block tall foundation. The entrance to the house used 6 fences and 1 fence gate.
The zombies completely ignored me - I could see them in the distance, but they did not aggro me.
One did spawn close enougn to approach the gate, I could easily kill him without any danger. Then his friends slowing started showing up, 1 at a time. I easily killed them and found it a great way to get some XP!
Of course, I've been playing Minecraft for a long time, so I know how to create a safe environment out of the bare essentials.
It hasn't spoilt my experience of the game in any way shape or form.
Well, duh. It hasn't spoiled your experience because you like the changes. Other, more casual players (the "grandmothers" that play, as someone in another topic called them), don't like these new features at all, and therefore the changes HAVE spoiled the game for them. As examples, there's a good number people in this thread alone that don't like the changes.
Tell me something: If they limited these changes to only apply to the "Hard" difficulty setting, so that people like you could enjoy the new features, and other more casual people could enjoy the more simplistic game they were used to (and everyone would be happy), would that in any way "spoil" your experience? (I'm assuming you already play on "Hard" mode).
I really don't get why people are so against the idea of only applying these changes to Hard.
I have no complaints nor any wish to voice what i think over what everyone else thinks.
Well then forgive my defensiveness. You seemed to be saying the same thing I'm hearing from many other on this thread and others: "I like the new changes, and I don't care if other people don't like them."
I'm glad you like them. To be completely honest, I'll freely admit that fighting a zombie horde was kinda fun, and if that's what I wanted to do all the time in Minecraft, I'd love the changes.
I (and many others) just think it's stupid that Mojang made these changes to every difficulty level, forcing everyone to have to deal with them all the time.
And since I feel like I've said the same thing a dozen times in this thread, I think I'm done with it. People are either going to "get it" or they won't.

You are right, I don't "get" people who complain about features in a new update.
Start a petition or roll back to the last update. Not much else you can do... oh yea, forgot one - you can vent on a forum and get mad when people don't agree with you!
you can vent on a forum and get mad when people don't agree with you!
Unless something has changed, Mojang reads forums and takes the community's feelings into consideration all the time. It's not about getting mad at people who disgree. I get "mad" when people suggest that something like this shouldn't be CONTROLLABLE by a server admin. As it stands now, there is no way to stop villages from being wiped out by this new zombie mechanic. And it creates an annoyance for players who want to be able to build at night in villages. Zombies seem to appear out of thin air, and killing the ones attacking the houses and villagers only spawns MORE zombies. There is no way to avoid it right now, and no configurable value to change it.
If there was a way for admins to control it, I'd have already changed it back to normal and nobody would be on here "getting mad at people who don't agree with us".
Personally, I think I will generally like these changes for SP, they add a bit of hardness to the game. I do support the idea of making it toggle in some way or another. this is a feature I will use myself, me and my brothers have a LAN world, we have tons of stuff, and a large town thing we are building and expanding, it is generally safe from mobs, however, if we were to play on 1.6, we would likely have zombies all over the place, which really wouldn't be that big of a deal, but it is kinda annoying when we are basically just building anyways, hence the ability to turn it off. However, these changes (in my opinion) still do not make the game harder then when I first joined (early beta, I believe) the game is still easier, we have beds, enchanting, OP armor, potions (not that I use them :\), a easier food system, and animal breeding. These were not in before, and the game was still good, it was harder, but still good, so you have to realize, if this isn't an option in the future, it will still be easier then it was before 1.8.
That being said, I would like to defend the last part of my first sentence: This does make is harder, not just more annoying.
What makes action/killing/RPG games hard? -dieing- and the effects included in that, for example, in minecraft, most of the time, when you die, you lose your XP and little else (sometimes you lose stuff, but generally you lose very little) that compared to Skyrim where you lose everything you have done since a save, is Skyrim more tedious because you lose time when you die? -somewhat, but if you only die once of twice on a area it is (generally) fine- or is it *gasp* harder? because you lose something when you die. That said, the art of making a game harder is basically making it easier to die at any given time, this is exactly what Mojang did with the zombie buff/health nerf, they made it easier to die (I myself have actually taken damage from zombies since 1.6) as for killing villages, it makes it harder for the player to have a village, thus making it harder for them to exploit the OP trades, thus making it easier to die, thus making the game harder.
As for to OPs question: 1.6, in the later snapshots.

Is it? That may be what minecraft is about to you, but that isn't what it is for everyone, for me Minecraft includes socializing with my brothers, learning how to program (my plan for future employment), exploring caves, and building simple things such as a nice house, exploing redstone and the like. It used to be about surviving, and all that entails, I used to feel fear at night, because there was something to fear, now there is little scarecrows out in the world to pick off with a (power V) bow. It used to be about exploring the terrain, but now it is about finding a village/witch hut/ender portal, and then going about other things, because the land doesn't look as cool now. As you can see, there are things that this will add to the game, I hope that they add more difficulty (as a option, for the people who don't want it (rude comment deleted)) and of course change the terrain, I think everyone wants that... Except strangely the devs...

Is it? That may be what minecraft is about to you, but that isn't what it is for everyone
Right. But if there is anything that minecraft represents, it is freedom. The freedom to do what you want. To play the game the way YOU want it to be played. By taking the ability of the player or the server admin to adjust this game-changing new feature, you take away part of that freedom minecraft is known for. Even on the easiest setting, it doesn't effect this new zombie spawning/aggro. While it may not bother you, there are many people who are bothered by this part of the update. I don't see the harm, or understand the resistance to, adding something so that this "feature" can be manually nerfed by the player/admin or disabled outright. I'm not sure why this is even an arguement in the community.
Maybe the point of the zombie horde is to stop players from building at night because night is supposed to be dangerous unless the area is secured!
If minecraft is supposed to be about the freedom to do what i want, when i want (which i don't think it is), then, well, i guess i would play creative?
This is how I would like to see difficulty levels in regards to mobs.
Peaceful = no aggressive mobs
Easy = mobs spawn but behave like zombie pigmen and only become aggressive if attacked
Normal = mobs spawn and behave as they do in 1.5.2
Hard = all the new mob mechanics plus boss mobs and whatever else you want
Everybody wins.

it is so easy to protect a wooden door from zombies - just put a porch in front of the door - you literally only need 4 fence blocks and 1 fence gate.
use beds to avoid the downtime at night, or start a mine shaft inside your perimeter to stay productive.
Instead of complaining that you can't the play the game the way you used to, develop a new strategy!
It's NOT just about houses and your home base. It's about EVERYTHING in the game.
