Stained clay uses one dye to stain 8 blocks. You can dye a sheep but at most you will only get 4 wool in a go.
I understand that wool is renewable and arguably easier to get, but hardened clay has a better blast resistance and isn't flamable, so it will last longer in the field and is slightly harder to grief.
2: The Colors are a nice addition.
While I hear people complaining about the colors and how they look "ugly" I think that they simply offer a different palate of colors. They are simply darker versions of the originals, and when used in conjunction with wool and existing blocks builds will look more vibrant, and in that case everybody wins.
3: This is a game about building blocks, stop complaining when we get more and new ones.
I have never heard a single child ever say, "Gee mom, I sure don't want that box of 64 crayons, it might have colors I don't like! Actually, I should complain to Crayola and whine at them to make fewer colors because I might have to use them all and that's just too much for me to handle!" This is basically what I hear when someone es about new features in Minecraft.
1. While sheep do only give out so little in one go if you have big sheep farms then you can get a lot of wool. Wool having low blast resistance may or may not matter in some situations but still a valid point. As for wool being flammable I think the new carpets serve as a way to bypass that although very limited way.
So as for your first point wool imo is more economically efficient.
2. Although I and some other people would prefer if the color alignment was slightly more equal (where black dyed clay would not be brown), stained hardened clay is still more aesthetically pleasing than wool in appearance for most things.
3. While yes people shouldn't complain about more building blocks I have heard there are limitations on what Mojang can add to minecraft(building stuff like blocks, slabs, stairs, etc.) due to coding/java related things ( You can see here http://www.minecraft...labs-and-steps/ ).
Also, along with the fact that there is limited space for additional blocks and stuff, I think that Mojang shouldn't overdo it with the variety of colored blocks. I mean colored wooden planks imo is going a little too far. I think ideas like colored glass, maybe sand, and light would be a better addition than say colored wooden planks. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1133916-colored-glass-the-original/
I mean if Mojang decided to add colored wooden planks it would be fine with me but maybe the community might react negatively about it but who knows *shrugs*.
Pretty sound logic, however, if clay isn't made easier to mass-produce, hardened clay will be as practical for survival building as gold blocks.
Clay is everywhere, this isn't beta clay that's rarer than diamonds. Just go look in some rivers for 10 minutes and you can easily get enough. After digging out two veins of clay I got enough for a stack of blocks.
I feel like dyed clay could potentially take some creativity out of minecraft. Instead of the 16 wool colors to use for pixel art and such (plus however many other "normal" blocks may be used in pixel art) there is now a much wider pallete to choose from and thus making creations simpler and less unique.
I do however like the idea of coloring stone blocks
I feel that when making colored floors or a colored wall, people don't like using wool, as it is not realistic to build a real house out of real wool.
I could go both ways with this. Are these features slowly corrupting the creativity in block selection in in Minecraft? Maybe.
Does this feature open up a new window for unique builds? Yes

Did you just say that a larger color palette decreases the creativity of Minecraft? Stop there.
I love the idea of dyable hardened clay. It will be significantly better in building colored buildings. More realistic. I would gladly give up colored wool to get colored clay

How on earth is a larger color palette going to stop creativity? If anything it will do the opposite!
Clay is a part of the game, and should be discussed. It's ridiculous people are acting like its a shame to just talk about it.
I like the idea of Stained Clay. I don't like that black is a dark brown either though. Ever since I started playing minecraft I wanted a different colorful block other than wool, because I don't like how wool is a weak block, and I don't the texture of it.
Creator of the mods "More uses for Pumpkins" & "Mining Overhaul" (Both outdated and now just lie in the history books of the Minecraft modding industry!)

I'm sorry, but how does this even make sense? Having more material and color options available will allow an expansion of creativity, not limit it.
Sorry, but the artist in me cannot fathom the concept of less creativity due to the availability of more media to work with.
We must be very lonely if we are going to talk about clay.
xD What? Come one, man - we're in a forum, we're supposed to discuss!
I love the new stained clay features. They're a lot of fun, imo, and they solve some issues I had with wool.
I could never build anything with wool and feel comfortable in it. Even though it looked good, in the back of my mind I couldn't help but feel like something was wrong... Because my house more resembled a giant sweater than a building, if you take material into account!

...but that's just like, my opinion, man.
Assuming you're playing pre-1.8 Beta, yes. Now Minecraft's bodies of water are nearly coated in clay.
...Wait, why are we debating this? People are seriously complaining about this? Wouldn't it be better to just ignore them, like I'm not doing?

Lovin' on some clay, call Whoopie Goldberg cuz I'm like Patrick Swaize all up in here.

I get the same feeling about the white - it's a little off-white.
I think of it as flesh colored.
