You there. 718 FPS is impossible.
They don't make screens that support above 200 or so...
Several people have reported FPS speeds of higher than 200, some of the best computers even over 1000. Check out minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Hardware performance .For me, the best is only 180. With or without Optifine.
Without optifine, best settings, I get around 150fps. Lowest settings, around 400fps.
With optifine, best settings, I get around 200 fps. Lowest settings, around 1000< fps.

For all those wondering if CPU or GPU(Video) is holding you back... grab a copy of Open Hardware Monitor. Install it and run it, then start/play Minecraft for a bit... then look at the CPU and GPU loads... if either is at 100%... there is your bottleneck. Whichever is higher will likely be the next upgrade you will want.
Mine is below, notice after playing Minecraft, the CPU is around 70% while the GPU core is at 16% (my cpu is old, just got the video card so this is what i expected to see)
13w16b i stay right at 60fps(of course it is plain vanilla) <-- Edit oops... it defaulted to vsync on... few posts down has more info.
1.5.1 vanilla is 125fps
1.5.1 with only Optifine HD_U_C4 default settings is 152fps
1.4.7 vanilla is 85fps
1.4.7 with 225+ mods including tweaked optifine, I stay just over 220fps
I figure as long as im holding 1080p 24fps all is good
Does using optifine sort of makes this argument void, I'm sure we can all get higher fps using it. what's your fps without it? Mine's around 81 with vsynch off...
Notice screenshots with mega FPS are normally looking down at the ground. FPS will always be better when there is nothing really going on.
The whole point about getting REALLY high FPS is like for the nether when there is a lot going on. You need to get high FPS so when there is a lot going on and FPS drops.
It is akin to like WoW or Rift... people who only get 80fps while standing around with nothing goin on will usually drop to 25 or below when in a very large raid where there is 20+ people all casting spells with particle effects flying everywhere. This happens to me in minecraft mostly in the nether when there is a lot of lava waterfalls... my 200+ fps will drop down to below 100. If I only get 60 or so when staring at the ground... it would be horribly slow when a lot is going on.
This really comes into play when you have mods like Milenaire, Battle Towers, or Buildcraft... the higher you can get the MAX FPS, the more acceptable it is when you start getting lots going on.

How did you get so many FPS? What's your specs?
That's a big drop. 1.5 created a massive drop in FPS from 1.4.7. 1.5.1 has so many new features that who knows what happened to the FPS?
Although, i was using a 256 texture pack at the time.

with optifine~ 2-4 fps
finally somebody got the same amount of fps as me
My fps used to be higher!
Until mcafee came into my life....

!
BOOM.
Well, I got 400+ without it.
1.5.1 though, no mods, I've been getting approx. 100-300 fps. I could probably allocate more ram and get better, but I'm far too lazy for it.

Edit: I created a test world with a tiny house covered with lava, lots of torches, villagers, some redstone lighting on a timer there is also a hole in the ground with nothing happening. ^^^ link is world download.
In the dark hole, i get 254 FPS, in the lava house... it drops to 94. screenshots below:
Edit2: I loaded the same world up in 1.5.1 with OptiFine and was able to maintain the 250+ in either "house".
But when I play normally I get around 80: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4506031/Pictures/normal.png
And yes. I normally allocating 8Gb ram. (I have 16Gb DDR3 1866Mhz)
