The random lava blocks in the Nether are only a problem if you turn off your brain and mine by pressing your face against the surface you're mining. Which is a foolish move in the Overworld, let alone the Nether. And if you're mining, you have plenty of instantly-breaking Netherrack to clean up any lava spills.
Far from being an annoyance, those lava blocks help break up the monotony, so they actually make the Nether safer IMO. I haven't accidentally mined through the ceiling of a huge open space and fell to my death for a while now.
yet nobody seems to get the point of the OP
it's not about dangerous.
it's about annoying.
waiting. 10. minutes. for. 1. NON. source. block. of. lava. to. go. away.
and yeah I know I could simply place a block - BUT that's not the point.
the point is it's a bug. and yeah it really is. even if bugs can be fixed very simply, they're still bugs and need to be removed.
Waiting 10 minutes for lava to disappear
Waiting 4 weeks for a bug to be removed
Taking a breath and placing that torch on lava
IMO anything that makes the nether more dangerous is good news, it's supposed to be a challenge and keeps you on your toes.
There's two complaints in the OP. On one hand, yeah, it's hidden lava, and it sucks if you dug under it. I've been there, so I understand the OP's need to vent, but ultimately I'm on the side of the people who like a challenging nether.
On the other hand, there is this bug which keeps the lava persistent, and doesn't really add any challenge. It's just annoying. You wait, or you place a block, or you find another way around, but those things aren't all that fun.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
Ah, internet forums. Really guys, we didn't even wait a full page to turn a comment on a video game into personal insults.
By the way, if you seriously think this is exaggerating how bad it is you clearly need to uninstall, you're too dumb to play Minecraft. And you're fat or something.

This would be an OK feature if it wasn't for the buggy Lava behaviour. The amount of time it hangs around after the source has been extinguished is the source of innumerable frustrations by Minecraft players. I thought it was intended until the above posted cited their post. It looks like that bug has been re-opened, for what that is worth.
Geez, the "it's a challenge" crowd doesn't seem to get it, slow lava dissipation rate compared to the Overworld has nothing to do with how challenging something is, it's simply an irritation, especially when that one random source block is covering your Nether Portal and it takes three hours to stop up while avoiding Ghasts. I had that happen, it wasn't fun to deal with nor was it a challenge, it was simply an irritation because even after blocking in the source block and the upper half of the flow, it kept flowing and flowing and flowing like nothing had happened. I went through several stacks of netherrack eliminating the lava flow spawned by a single lava source, and as stated before, there was no challenge present, just a source of irritation.

Just waiting for Forge to officially release for 1.13.x to remove unneeded mobs from 1.13, like Phantoms, from the game because, in my gameplay based opinion, they add nothing of value to the game.
Fun fact: Clicking a bed every 30 minutes doesn't make you a better player, it makes you one who clicks a bed every 30 minutes. Wouldn't you rather just mod them out of the game completely?
or wait forever for you to use your brain.
can you read? at all?
okay. trying to make my point. don't want to harrass you.
as I said, yeah I COULD place blocks, and yes, I do.
but that's doesn't change the fact that the bug must be fixed.
as I said, even if the solution is SO simple, the bug is still a bug.
Sorry if you found my 10 years of education in Japan a little immature.
But what I want to point out also is that you guys do not have to spend your day complaining to everyone about it.
A bug is something that would be reported, go through a process of figuring the code that has to be altered and testing performance to...... you get the point. We know its a bug.
Sometimes a bug is something that you have to get along with. Many bugs are recognized as a part of the game, such as BUDs. If you have moderate experience playing Minecraft, lava is not a much of a problem.
So why don't you spend your time figuring out a way to improve your means, and enjoy Minecraft?
I really have to LOL at the Mojang Defense Force in this thread.
"Mojang shouldn't be expected to fix bugs! This one has been around forever, so you should be used to it, and know how to work around it! Shame on you for expecting them to actually fix it!"
Do you have any idea how utterly ridiculous you all sound?
The recent changes they have been making to the game have made this long-standing bug far more noticeable and annoying. Just because they've ignored it this long, doesn't mean it shouldn't get fixed, especially now that it's becoming much more obvious that something is wrong.
Personally I think if lava flows faster in the nether it should also dissipate faster in the nether. I mean, I'm not one to claim Minecraft should be totally realistic, but it has to have at least little physics principles in there.
But what I want to point out also is that you guys do not have to spend your day complaining to everyone about it.
Nobody here has. It doesn't take 24 hours to make this thread or reply to it. It's an issue, and it should be addressed, and posting a thread about it is the best way to get it addressed by making more people aware of it.
We know its a bug. Sometimes a bug is something that you have to get along with.
That is the silliest thing I've ever read! I think Mojang and Minecraft are developing well, but the fact that a simple logic error- and one that is clearly not intended- can last so long is the issue. They might not even be aware of it. the point is that the entire thing begs for publicity- It has a Mojira tracker entry, but there is still very little recourse or information from Mojang themselves, primarily about whether they intend to leave this blatant logic error in their code to muddle the game experience for players, whether they decided that even though it is a logic error, they don't mind the code redundancy and like the effect that nobody else likes, etc.
Many bugs are recognized as a part of the game, such as BUDs.
That is more a testament to the fact that the bug hasn't been fixed so people have had to deal with it. For a cancer patient, chemotherapy becomes part of their life. That doesn't mean it's preferred.
If you have moderate experience playing Minecraft, lava is not a much of a problem.
Neither would assigning this bug to somebody working on MC to take a few minutes to fix. They are working hard to fix bugs and this is one of those. It should be fixed. There really is no argument for it staying the way it is. "people are used to it" is a stupid reason.
So why don't you spend your time figuring out a way to improve your means, and enjoy Minecraft?
Because the game is broken. The fact is that the bug with lava can ruin the experience. Why? Simple.
It's broken. Broken things should be fixed. I like scoreboards, Lava sound effects, Ember popping sounds, and the multitude of game features that are being added- but that shouldn't overshadow the fact that this bug has been sitting around for ages, no different than other bugs, such as negative durabilities and booster carts, both of which have been fixed. Imagine if Mojang had left in the bug where you could not fight a water stream. This is no different.
There's code for making lava disappear somewhat slower, but then it fails to schedule the next block update after. It's supposed to be slow, but not that slow. The bug's been around a long time, having been obscured by a feature.
I know, I remember when it at least disappeared within 10 minutes instead of being around forever. I personally find the hidden lava to be cool but I agree that the persistence bug needs to be removed too.
Welp, time to start posting the link to the bug report around.
The bug has been already reported, now what good does it by saying it's broken?
On the other hand, still, I believe there is a way to get around this bug with lots of thinking and trying.
What if this was never fixed? As Mojang states, we cannot guarantee that any project will ever be completed and/or provided support for. Now what will you do? Standing in front of lava forever? No. Probably you'll find a way around it. Shouldn't we do that now?
The bug has been already reported, now what good does it by saying it's broken?
The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Minecraft has a lot of bugs. Every update adds new bugs, and fixes tons of old bugs. And many bugs have users who see them as their primary mission to get Mojang to fix their pet bug. And that's fine. If people just ignored already-reported bugs, they'd be guaranteed never to get fixed. At least if you complain in vain, there's a chance of Mojang saying "gee, a bunch of users seem to be affected by this bug, maybe we should look at it again."
There are bugs in the game that will never be fixed, because people ignore them, or aren't aware of them, and Mojang can't tell the difference.

Of course there is. There's ways around a LOT of the bugs in the game. Some bugs are very simple, others more game-breaking, and some even have beneficial (if odd) side-effects.
It's still a bug. It's still wrong. It's still something that's annoying (even if the workaround is simple). It could be very easily repaired with about 10 seconds of coding, as the linked thread explains. The more publicity it gets, the more likely someone at Mojang will notice and say "Hey, there's a bug here. And I can fix it in 10 seconds. Boom. Done."

Remember kids, file sharing kills babies.
BOOM! Lava now decays. Just put it in your minecraft.jar
I made my own shader pack, by the way.

You have to open Minecraft.jar in 7Zip or WinRAR and drop the file into it, overwriting the original.
