That's not a lot of RAM, it just look like a lot relatively speaking. It's the difference between "Minecraft is using 814,612kK!" And "Minecraft is using .77 of a gig. Yawn."
Its alot to me, I can have WoW and League of Legends up for 796,000.... still lower than Minecraft.
Apples and Oranges. Most of the processing in MMO's are done either by your video card or by the server. (MMO's that let your CPU & Memory do the work are subject to memory hacks).
Holy smokes...the latest snapshot is eating memory like it was at a buffet.
I get it to max out at around 1.1gb

For me, Firefox is currently eating up around 1.2GB of Memory. Followed hilariously by Thunderbird, at only 100MB.
