I love anvils for removing some of the obnoxious randomness. If I have a godmode bow or sword, I can prolong it for MUCH longer. No more chests full of bane of arthropod V swords!
Can't wait for hoppers too. One hopper above a brewing stand, nothing else, shove all the ingredients in there and I'm saved having to sit there and stare at the brewing stand while it slooowly brews. Similar thing for furnaces, but it takes a few more hoppers, so I might not bother.
Cobblestone walls are definitely one of those small things, yes. Being able to turn my insane masses of cobblestone into fence blocks (at a 1:1 ratio no less!) really comes in handy and saves me wasting tons of wood.
My favorite recent additions that have already been officially released are Enchanted Books because it finally gives us a way to store enchantments and it is a nice find in dungeon chests; Pumpkin Pie because it finally gives me use for the stacks and stacks of Pumpkins I have in my chest; and Night Vision Potions because they make it a lot more easier to see what you are doing when building or hunting at night.
As for future features that will be released in a official patch in a few weeks time, my favorite additions are Blocks of Redstone because they will greatly break down the amount of space all my Redstone Dust takes in my chests; and Nether Quartz because they are both the Nether's first ore and they look nice when crafted into a block.
Flower pots. Very cool and, although still decorative, gives a use for digging up clay.
Carrots. It's a farmable food that heals more than Melons. However, they don't completely steal melons' reputation, as you have to replant them.
Anvils. They allow you to rename items, and enchant things using:
Enchanted Books. They basically allow you to choose which enchant they want, although you still have to go through a lot of books and XP to get the one you want.
Fireworks. They are very pretty, and have different colors and shapes. My favorite is the creeper one.

I second this!
My favorite is definitely the Comparator. It changes Redstone in uncountable ways.

I love the new map making tools. The ability to customize mobs with armor, potion effects, and everything in general is fantastic. The other thing is the command block.

High up on my list are corner stairs. I would've also said upside down stairs and slabs, but they don't qualify as "past few months."
If Mojang were to add vertical slabs, then I would truly be in heaven, building wise.
