This nerf has to fall under annoyances than challenges.
The way I see it there are two main problems with the nerf(crops) that may affect people:
1. This will make bones less useful early on and may hinder new players in SSP.
2. If one has a big source of bones then this nerf will be very annoying because you would have to apply bonemeal more times for each crop and this can severely slow down big farms. I see this problem more in SMP.
Getting diamonds isn't a challenge. The hardest part is finding them, and that is just mining and getting lucky. All the rest apply to any exploration within a cave or player-dug hole, and Iron is extremely abundant so that isn't even a challenge.
So... yeah. Annoyances =/= difficulty.
But its still more time / effort consuming.
Oh and spet at most on my third I day I have 1 stack of bones, at most. And by then my wheat patch is big enough bone meal wasn't needed.
They could also do directly adjacent blocks and it would be a 7:5 ratio as opposed to 7:9. Greater yield than trees (under best circumstances) but less than it was before.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
Consider now that skeletons are much more difficult to kill without good gear. That alone and maybe the reducing of bonemeal yields to 1:1 would balance out bonemeal better than the recent nerf would.

Before, bone meal was too easy for me. I tested on crops in versions prior to the new snapshots, and they are fully grown. Now it is nerfed, it will upgrade crops to the next stage.

I like it.
Again, only OP if you have tons of bone meal / wheat. which this isn't meant for anyway...
....I myself would much rather need to smelt bones / combine them with rotten flesh or something to get this effect. This way it wouldn't be "Op" like SOME people say, but would still be useful for people who don't have a wheat farm up. But even then they will still complain.
They obviously thought of that already, because it's obviously easier to change a crafting recipe than adding a new particle effect and changing gobs of code.
If you believe yourself to be smarter than the team at Mojang, why aren't you earning millions from your game, oh wise Master of The Balance?
So if you want bones to only supply one bonemeal, what happens to the balance of its use as white dye? Did you consider that before you started spouting off (with no supporting opinions) that they simply suck at balancing their currently pretty well-balanced game?

They did say that the bonemeal would be balanced out later. I liked the idea that it was nerfed as it prevents an easy way to produce mass amounts of food and wood on any difficulty, but they did overdo it a little on the crops.
Just have to get enough string to make a fishing rod instead of focusing on getting bones for your insta-farm. I think fishing is probably one of the most overlooked food sources. (Mostly because farming with bonemeal was so easy.)
I totally agree, sometimes I don't even have a farm because fish was pretty easy for me to get in large numbers (if the rod don't move in 15 seconds, pull it out and try again, I always found it easier to fish from a distance away from the bobber) and it gets you cats! I barely see anyone( actually nobody) with a pet cat nowadays!

Did you consider white dye enough to realize that the people who use dyes for anything usually aren't just starting out and have numerous bones on hand?
Obviously not, since you think that white dye is used so much that changing the crafting recipe will even have an effect on the use of white dye.
This doesn't make food easier or harder to get over all, this just makes bone meal worthless, and forces people to instead farm trees for apples. Or fish. How is this good, taking choices away?
It's not useless for trees, mushrooms and other crops. I agree that the nerf does make bonemeal useless to use for wheat, but I also agree that bonemeal was OP and needed a nerf.
My opinion is that Mojang could have came up with a better method to nerf bonemeal. I'm not into spam clicking wheat either, but some sort of a nerf was necessary. Mojang just didn't choose the right method.
There's a higher initial investment than the old system. You need 3 bones to get started and you only get the full effectiveness if you've collected 9 seeds. Before you could start with one bone and one seed and go seed, bonemeal, seed, bonemeal, seed, bonemeal, bread.
You also don't get the full effectiveness with dispensers due to space constraints (in case they were allowed to plant seeds.)
With all due respect this is a load of bull... I mean a 3x3 area is a very, very, small wheat farm and 9 seeds is nothing, and so is 3 bones. You're suggesting that bonemeal be made way more OP than it origionally was for ALL farms 3x3 and larger. That's seriously OP - Big time.
Yes. Why? Well first I don't think a lot of people understand that making things super easy (such as using bonemeal to farm) kinda ruins the point of it. For instance, I was making a farm and my friend said "why don't you just make three farmland blocks and spam bonemeal?" my response "because it's not as fun" he said "yeah, but who cares this is easier." My point: with the current bonemeal there is no point to ever make a farm so all in all YES I like the new bonemeal.
I really do support this: it really balances the amount of bonemeal being used and it can often give the players some challenges of making their own farms in their gameplay. But what I really do suggest is the fossil ores underneath grounds inside cave systems, that gives the player one bone after being mined. Adding that fossil block can be a big purpose of going to the caves for it, and it can really balance the amount. I guess the rarity of those fossil blocks could be in a same rate as redstone, since I want them deep underground.
Besides, at least the rarity of obtaining every single crop hasn't changed yet. I also suggest about the amount of bonemeal being created in each difficulty, so that could be an advantage for starters. And also, I think each crop should have a differentiating amount of bonemeal to grow to its mature state, so it could be a lot easier. Wheat, carrots and potatoes should be grown with less bonemeal than melons or pumpkins, since those two blocks can actually grow by itself nonstop unless its stem is demolished.
You can make your own skeleton farm if you actually find a skeleton spawner, or just make a mob spawning room by yourself, duh.
I don't think this whole bonemeal controversy can be a problem for this update, because I just prefer letting Mojang what's good for them. Now guys... quit whining, at least Dinnerbone can change that pretty soon.
I don't like it at all; they nerfed it WAY too harshly. 2 or 3 times at most for wheat would be okay with me, and maybe 4 or 5 for trees. I think scaling the growth and amount of bonemeal given according to the difficulty would be a good idea though, as stated by other users.

Not worst thing, but is something terrible in my opinion
