It's not a quick fix, sure, but there simply isn't any excuse for not making this highest priority. It used to work in both single- and multiplayer, so if things break really badly, like they did here, you might just have to roll back to get it sorted out.
I've been stuck on 1.2.5 for ages now, so quite frankly I don't understand why Mojang keep teasing with all the new versions and features when the releases they're in are utterly unplayable.
Well, not unplayable then, but no fun to play at all—the end effect is pretty much the same. I can't see how it's possible to enjoy the game with anything above 1.2.5.
Black patches under overhang areas isn't a really big deal. I think they got it right prioritizing the rendering engine first. Things not rendering optimally or at all are much worse than a few unnaturally dark spots.
the problem is there are spawning monsters in safe zones, where they normaly should not be able to spawn ... because of light level greater as 8! ... thats the problem and not the rendering, nobody cares about...
The lighting bug is a Client-Side, Visual Issue, and does not affect mob spawns.
The Rendering Engine rewrite will resolve this, once it get's merged with the Master branch.

Because of black spots under overhangs or stairs/slabs?
I think the fixed rendering engine/lighting engine is set for 1.5 right? I know they had a new lighting engine in 1.4 but it was pretty unoptimized and lagged with too many of the partially transparent blocks.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
